I love the proenza packaging tooI'm honestly digging the packaging, but then I really like the Proenza Schoulerr packaging, too. I'm just that kind of weirdo. Gray and orange packaging? Bring it on!
I see what you are saying, but it kind of does feel Brooke Shields to me... but 80's Brooke Shields. That sort of robotty feel is just what was considered sleek and modern in the 80's. MAC must really be kicking themselves with the throwback packaging now since so many people seem to hate it.Considering I loved neutrals, I stayed away from this thread. And then I saw what Voldermort posted and was like, ew gross. ... That's not very Brooke Shields-y though. I'm surprised with the packaging. It looks more like Robot packaging. Like if they were doing a Terminator Collection. Thinking a :fluffy:
It's probably too soon to tell. the '80's are back I suppose. We're seeing some citrus-80's colors coming back in the Simpsons (including that vibrant blue in the e/s palette, yellow gloss). Punk Couture most clearly. Those collections did/will do fine. I think MAC is a trend-maker and I think they execute well in the end. Or they will cut their losses and only make a few.I see what you are saying, but it kind of does feel Brooke Shields to me... but 80's Brooke Shields. That silver on the box/metal evokes the '80s when as Tom Ford says sensuality was “hard, because it was dangerous. There was an off-putting quality to it.” He thinks its was because of AIDs, etc. It's not surprising to me that those products put ppl off at first. It's supposed to. To evoke that era, you have to echo that vibe a bit. If mac has updated the colors/looks for now then people will respond well once the swatches are out. If not, then mac probably has another aesthetic success on its hands (even if it doesn't translate to the cash register) and they'll limit the quantity pretty sharply.
Personally, I think the biggest problem that mac will have is competition from other lines/launches. Companies pull out their big guns Q4--and those companies are getting better at formulas/colors every year. The holiday preview pictures from other lines are looking insanely good.
I think the slightly older crowd will "get it" more when they see it. I'm 34 so I do have some fuzzy memories of Brooke from back then. I think when MAC puts out more promo for it that it will make more sense. Maybe it will sell well with the less vocal older crowd that relates more to the Brooke Shields they remember from her supermodel heyday. If you search for some of her magazine cover shoots from back then, I think the packaging echoes that feel. Even the orange square that everyone hates seems to be a throwback to the color blocking of the 80's. This is going to be polarizing, though, and they have clearly turned off a lot of people. I'm still fine with the packaging. It's certainly not my favorite by any means and I don't find it "pretty", but I see what they were trying to do.If this is going to be marketed as an "80's" Brooke Shields then (after googling... I was only three then) I think it's spot on. There's a Time cover she did and immediately made me think of the packaging and the lip glosses. It's not my personal style but I do love neutrals. Something might pop up that I like.
Yep, I think they might be the best demographic for the couture items maybe anyway. Who knows. I don't the couture line has been a volume seller. Maybe it will crash and burn, wouldn't be the first couture collection to do that, right?I think the slightly older crowd will "get it" more when they see it. I was probably going to skip, and then the packaging sealed the deal. My decision was whether I was going to buy something for the packaging (to collect) and not that I was going to skip simply b/c of the packaging. If that makes any sense.Does packaging really trump product now? Doesn't anyone care to see the swatches? I mean, I'm likely to skip this collection, too, but we've barely only gotten a glimpse of the actual products and yet it seems that almost everyone has already made up their minds to skip just based on a single picture of the packaging. I mean, that's fine, and no one should buy anything they dislike or won't use, but still...
Oh yes, it absolutely does. Totally understandable.I was probably going to skip, and then the packaging sealed the deal. My decision was whether I was going to buy something for the packaging (to collect) and not that I was going to skip simply b/c of the packaging. If that makes any sense. I have hauled a lot lately, and I am trying to be more selective in purchasing for now.
I enjoy the different colors, but I really hate when they change the shape of the lipstick tube!I actually dislike all special packaging. I would like my MAC to be black, black, black.
That can certainly happen! I still feel like they got the look right for what it is, even if I don't think it's very pretty to look at, personally. There are trips to the past that each of us aren't interested in taking, for various reasons. I can appreciate it on a certain level and see what they were trying to do. I actually like gray and orange together, even if that makes me color blind lol, but as a whole, I find the packaging much too plain to have any strong feelings about it one way or the other.I am one of the older members on here. I was born in the 60s, so I was around when her stardom rose. I think the packaging is ugly. Sometimes a trip down memory lane, can be disappointing; not viewing it the same way any longer.
