Asia Carrera's amazing birth story

I saw this story posted on another forum that I frequent and just thought I'd share. Asia Carrera, the former porn star, recently had another baby -- all by herself. No midwife, no nurse, no doctor, no medical personnel, no husband (husband died recently

), and with a young child in hand

Amazing.

Holy molely....what an awesome story!!!

I would love a homebirth...but there is not a soul in the area that does such a thing. This is Illinois...home of ridiculous multi million dollar malpractice lawsuits.

Holy cow....I would be so freakin scared if I went into labor by myself. I mean I know women did it for centuries before we had the luxuries of drugs and doctors and fancy hospitals but I'm such a drama queen, everybody in the city would have heard me screaming for help!

Damn...what an awesome story! I admire her attitude, strength, and courage. And I feel badly that her husband couldn't be there with her

It just goes to show, nature knows how to take care of mommies. I don't know that I could ever be that brave, I'd be so paranoid that something could go wrong. But then, something could go wrong anywhere and she knew just what to do.

Ahhh.... You got to have some big balls if your willing to consider giving birth by yourself.. Because honestly anything can happen, you might need an episiotomy or if you labor for too long the baby will be stressed and its heart rate can drop.. soo many scary things..... Shes got incredible strength that's for sure

She didn't do it on purpose; he came so fast the ambulance didn't get there in time to take her to the hospital.

I've been a 'fan' of Asia and following her story for years now. I hope one day she finds love again.

@ ratmist: Well you had preeclampsia. That's dangerous stuff. I think most of the time a home birth is possible, but with conditions like preeclampsia it just isn't.

I work postpartum. More than 9 out of 10 natural deliveries involve somme sort of laceration and tearing in the periurethral area during delivery. We don;t do many episiotomies anymore, just repairs of the tears. You can't do that at home. Also, there is risk of hematoma, nuchal cord around the baby and post partum hemorrage.

You can if you have a certified midwife with a rock-solid back up plan.

Again, Asia didn't have a choice; she went from mild contractions to full on labor in less than an hour. The ambulance didn't make it in time.

Aye.

It was very frightening. We didn't know I had preeclampsia until a routine prenatal check showed all the symptoms had suddenly appeared, practically overnight. I'd had a headache for a week, but none of the other symptoms (protein in the urine was nil, no high blood pressure readings, no pain in my belly).

When I suddenly showed protein and high BP, I was induced in 24 hours. Until then, my pregnancy was utterly normal and boring. I had wanted a home birth initially, but I'm very glad now that I didn't get one. My boy needed forceps and I ended up with an episiotomy and tears anyway, lost a lot of blood, had transfusions, etc. It was a nightmare of a mess.

My point is that the preeclampsia only showed up at the very, very end of my pregnancy, and it was only detected because of a routine check on my health. I worry that if someone isn't getting enough healthcare during their pregnancy, home birth can be very dangerous to the health of the mother and child. I'm all for independence and being able to make birth as natural and happy as possible, but I think too many things can go wrong.
