i think it has more to do with "limited edition hype" than production cost though. seems to me whenever mac makes a something new that cost more to produce, they'll increase the price (eg: dazzleglass vs regular lipglass, the annual coutour collection)
so many us are buying so many of these eyeshadows because they are LE. they do have a lovely texture, but if the starflash finish is permanent, a lot of us would just wait til we "have the funds" to buy them. since mac has a new collection coming out every other week, most of us will forget about it quickly and most of the time we don't even look at the permanent range (besides trying to find dupes and buying things we already had before). so that's probably also why mac has been making a lot of things permanent then discontinuing them a few months later (like a lot of matte2 eyeshadows, slimshines, and paintpots)
speaking of DCing things, i'm pissed that mac is discontinueing so many matte2, fluidlines, paintpots, and cremestick lipliners. these are all the things i love. i want them to make new ones, not discontinue more
