Susanne, I hope the problems and the stress in your mum's life will resolve quickly. I have no doubt that your presence, positive outlook and support will help tremendously.
Warning: a very long post
Eye shadows:
I didn't waste time on Shimmermoss and Humid, since they are perm and I already have both.
Sweet & Punchy is a great bright, vibrant colour with a superb payoff – a typical veluxe pearl. The only problem is that, to me, it is the exact same colour as Rated R. Once you swatch both, there is a slight difference due to different finishes - S&P is more vibrant because of the lime-yellow sparkles (due to the sparkles it may even appear as an overall brighter shadow). To be honest, I like S&P even more than Rated R, but since it is not a colour I would use on a daily basis, I couldn't justify the purchase. I also seriously, seriously doubt one could tell a difference between the two in a look. I believe there was a similar case not too long ago - Strike a pose vs. Birds& Berries. To some, they were different enough to warrant owning both, to others they seemed indistinguishable.
Sand&Sun is a light peach. Judging from the colour in the pot I expected it to be more pink, but it truly is a light matte peach (on fairer skins it is actually a medium peach). The colour payoff is ok – I had to pack it on a bit when I swatched it in store. When I did my mu it was easier to work with. I used a base and a dense brush (214) and one swipe was all it took for the colour to show up nicely on my lids. The colour complements coral, orange, pink and red shadows so beautifully that I just couldn’t pass it up (I also do not have a similar colour in my stash).
Firecracker to me was the standout e/s. I've only just started exploring the orange and coral looks so I may be biased lol, but right now I'm in awe at how nicely such colours complement my green-blue-grey eyes. I believe one reviewer said that they find the colour the same as that of Hot, hot, hot. Well, on me at least, they are different and not just finish wise. They actually seem more similar in pots than they do swatched or applied on the lids. If HHH is a coral red with some pinkish hues, Firecracker also has the same coral component but on an orange base and with an evident pink veluxe sheen. Since they are unmistakeably from the same colour family they look gorgeous together (and not much blending is required). However, I can understand that for someone who already has HHH or something similar and doesn't use /like this type of colours it will be an easy pass or even a 'close-enough-dupe'.
Lip liners and eye kohls:
I didn't buy anything from this 'category' mainly due to my limited budget. I swatched
Life's a Breeze next to In Synch and they are very different. In Synch is a yellow-based pink and a lot brighter. Life's a Breeze is more 'muted', soft, and nutral (I'd call it a true light neutral pink). Next to In Synch it definitely seems blue-based, but viewed individually the cool undertones are really not that evident – at least to my inexperienced eye. It's a very nice neutral and also office-friendly pink lip liner. Due to its softness and colour, I imagine it looking great with numerous pink & rosy lipsticks. The orange one was in-your-face orange and I know I couldn't pull that colour off to save my life, so I passed.
Float on By is described as a dark green turquoise colour and imo there is nothing 'dark' about it. I was surprised at how blue it was (green was mostly a sheen, highlight). It is similar to MUFE L12, but they are by no means dupes. MUFE is even bluer and a shade darker (but with the same green highlights). Since I have too many liners and I don't even use my lovely waterproof MUFE all that often, I passed. But if my budget (or the steep European prices) allowed it, Life's a Breeze and Float on By would be coming home with me.
Blushes and bronzers:
I love my Ripe Peach dearly and use it frequently but unfortunately mine does not have too much of the bottom, pinky-coral colour, so I wanted a pink-coral blush to complement & pinkify (lol) RP. I think that Hipness is quite perfect for this purpose.
And the last thing I bought was the
Beach Bronze creme bronzer. First of all, I've never owned a MAC bronzer before. I'm an ardent NARS Laguna user, but mine unfortunately shattered recently (I can still use it, but it's a pain in the…) and I was in need for a replacement. The reason I love Laguna is because it does not have any orange undertones. As far as I can tell (and I scrutinized the poor thing under all lights/angles), Beach Bronze is Oompa-loompa-effect free. Another bonus is that it can be applied very, very sheerly making it suitable for lighter skin tones – I used my 188 and 131 brushes. Naturally, one can easily build up the colour. The only thing that might be a bit problematic for some is that I personally find it quite yellow-based plus there are also gold sparkles that add to the overall yellow tone. To my surprise Weekend was also pretty nice – not a gold-brown as Beach Bronze, but more of a bronze-brick-brown with very subtle pink sparkles. It appeared tailor-made for those with pink undertones.
I wasn't really interested in the glosses and lipsticks to begin with, so just glanced at them quickly. Nothing caught my eye so it was fairly easy to stick to my current no-lipstick rule.
Overall, I find To the beach a very nice, bright, versatile summer collection (Lure remains my fave). Of course there is room for improvement – e.g. repromoting some of the sought-after e/s instead of throwing in two perms... I’m quite indifferent to the packaging – I don’t particularly like it, but I do not find it repulsive either plus I’m planning on depotting the e/s anyway.
I tried to write as an in-depth review as possible, but if anyone has any more questions, I'd be happy to help. And since a picture is worth a thousand words, I’ve just posted my swatches in the swatch thread.
