Your logic is STILL faulty, Raerae.
Regardless of whether the parents find it acceptable or not, it's still a bad parenting decision, across the boards hands down no questions asked.
Allowing a child, any child, to dress in a manner specifically intended to invite sexual attention is poor decision making.
There's no question about that.
There's no argument that can refute that.
There's nothing, anywhere, any way, any how, that can change that fact. Period.
It's not about me being right, it's about pure simple cold hard reality.

What is the favorite clothing quote? "Just because they make it in your size doesn't mean you should wear it.". It's about choices.

Thats your opinion though. Which is fine. Your allowed to have it, and allowed to raise your kids the way you want. Those parents who allow their kids to dress in this fashion, obviously disagree with you. And there allowed to do that as well. You raise your kids, they raise theirs. Chances are, both will end up being perfectly functional adults.

It's like the whole topic of teens and sex. There are groups of parents that feel they dont need to talk about it because it's not happening  abstinence right? And then there is the other 1/2 who choose to talk to their kids about safe sex, condoms, birth control, etc. Both sides think the other side it wrong, and they are right. It's an opinion.

Comming from a family who openly talked about things, and being someone who enjoys wearing mini-skirts, baby tee's, tight jeans, etc. I dont find it that big of a deal when girls wear clothing I wore when I was that age.

Are more teens dressing this way now? Probably. But then again, a lot of the stigma associated with this type of dress has gone away as well. So is it really that surprising that more girls who in the past might not have wanted to be seen as a "slut" (but still wanted to dress that way), are dressing this way now.

Jeans, tshirt, shoes.

And, what I wore as a child/teenager doesn't have any bearing on the discussion. Anymore than what you wore does.

Like I said before, when you're a parent, you'll understand. Until then your perspective is limited.

Actually it does.

As a teen mom yourself, 16 right? It kinda shows that what you wear really has no real impact on how you will handle sexual situations. Each indivudual will handle them in their own way. They are two completely different things. It's not fair to say that all girls who dress one way will by default act a certain way, or respond to the attention the same. Your own pregnancy shows that even though you dressed conservativly, you were sexually active as a teen.

You dont think that has any impact on your stance? As a parent you hope to pass on the life lessons that you lived through while growing up. I know my expierences shape my opinions on this subject. I wore skirts and tank tops, tube tops etc when i was in my teens, and didn't really think it was that big of a deal. So I can't really find fault in the girls who wear them today.

No, I don't think it has any impact on my stance.

a) The things that led to my pregnancy are quite honestly not fodder for message board posting, nor are they anyone's business unless I choose to share the details.
b) The girls you're talking about? The ones who wore the miniskirts and tank tops and dressed "slutty"? They were all "friends" of mine in high school. ALL of them got pregnant early (two of them [sisters] got pregnant at the same time and both quit school), another got pregnant and moved out of district, the other two? One's a butch lesbian with serious man hating and self loathing issues and the other is a former Austin area stripper with eating disorder and drug abuse problems. I think, in the long run, I still came out on top. Not a single one of these girls, myself excluded, has had a serious, healthy, real relationship in her life. I see them from time to time and marvel at the sad state of their lives. Difference between us now? I don't validate myself with my body. I don't have to. I grew out of that at around...18. They're still living in that world. They're still dressing like "hoochies" when they go out. I don't need to. I can get attention by being myself, and myself is a whole lot better/cooler than someone who has to use something that's sure to fade away to garner attention.
c) Allowing children (such as yes, myself and my friends) to be allowed to be in situations beyond their maturity level is bad parenting. I didn't dress like my friends, because I didn't have the MONEY to. I didn't have the financial means to do that and my father didn't have the financial means at that time to provide it. As a result, though I didn't dress like they did, I certainly shared traits in regards to early sexualization, though outward appearances wouldn't be indicative of such inner turmoil.

People are allowed to make bad choices. That's the whole "choice" thing - some people make good ones, some people make bad ones. I am pro-choice!

I love how RaeRae is so controversial

i <3 playing devil's advocate...

I PMed someone on Myspace with the name RaeRae because I thought it might be her, but it wasn't =[.. So awkward

We all have the capacity to choose, be it right or wrong, parents or children. Luckily the United States (and many other countries) doesn't restrict our RIGHT to CHOOSE, regardless whether or not we make the "wrong" decision. Freedom ??

When the word "like" is used 30 times in one sentence ( "And like he asked me to go out for coffe but i was like nuhuh i'm really not interested, he called me like 30 times like...")....it's a problem.
When stores for little girls (La Senza Girls for example) are selling thongs for anyone under 15,....There is a problem. For God's sake, little girl, you're 12, you should be wearing granny style panties!!! Oh, and are those fake nails with a french manicured tip? Oh and what? You did WHAT to that guy???
When girls as young as 9 years old are walking down the street at night with HIGHLIGHTS and LOWLIGHTS in their hair, there is a problem. Mind you this is before their get their period.I wasn't allowed to dye my hair until I hit 16!!!
When young girls can spell V-U-I-T-T-O-N better than any other word in the dictionnary, oh yeah there is a problem.
It's sad, it really is. It's early sexualization of children, and teenage girls. The worst part about it is, alot of girls think that this type of image attracts the opposite sex...How can acting stupid be attractive? The guy is going to use you , then lose you.
Girls look up to these people. I really don't think it's something we should take lightly.

ugh couldnt agree more! i hate going to the mall and seeing all tehse 11 year olds with tons of shopping bags, highlights and louis vuitton/chanel purses. Not to mention they wear tons of makeup too. im shocked at what the girls in my sisters school look like, and shes in 6th grade! Seriously i think kids grow up wayyyy too fast these days!

I thought I had heard it all, until one of the girls at the MAC counter where I freelanced this weekend told me this:

On Friday, a 6 year old girl and her mother (yes, you read correctly....6 years old) go to the counter. Cute little girl, except she's dressed like Britney Spears circa 2001 (except that it's all D&G and she's also wearing LV shoes). She has highlights in her hair, too. Little girl starts looking at the lipgloss and tells her mom that she wants this one...and this one....and this one...and that one...oh, and that eyeshadow, and that blush...etc etc. Mom says, "Don't you need some brushes too?" So she picks out one of each brush....almost $700 later, the little girl opens her LV speedy bag, pulls out a Burberry wallet, and hands the MA an American Express Black Card with her name on it.

Can you imagine what this child will want when she turns 16??

I used to go to the dermotologist with my Mom when I was in Jr. High, and highschool. It was free on her insurance, why not =p Nothing like getting your pores cleaned out by a professional hehe.

*shrug* their family has money.

Just because most of us dont have a American Express Black Card at our age, let alone at 6 years of age, doesn't mean that those who are fortunate to be born into weath should not be able to spend their own money.

Different families have different disposable incomes. Just because our disposible incomes aren't large enough to allow is to by designer clothing for our children, doesn't mean we should look down upon those who can.

But, on MAC?!!? It's not even a big deal nowadays that kids have this much, but 6, and spending $$ on MAC makeup. I could see Toys R Us....and even then, I sould hope she has as many books as she does toys.

<shrug> Thats up to the parents to decide how old they want their children to be when they start wearing makeup.

I'm sure the reason she's buying MAC, is the same reason she's wearing designer clothing at 6. They have money to throw away. So while we see MAC as something expensive and special, to them, it's just MU. Like the cheapie little MU kits we used to get from our parents when we were kids. Only the kids cheapie little kit, is MAC.

On the bright side, she's probably have a great hand at doing her ES when she gets older =p I wish I had been into MU sooner, only to have more practice.
