Racist? Controversial? Or is everyone just making a big deal?

IMO it's an ad of contrasts.
The black female is representative of the current PSP.
The white female is representative of the coming PSP.

The white PSP is saying "Hey. Here I come. Be ready."

Some people perceive it as racism...because they're looking for it.

I think its an add that suposed to get people talking like this, I think I stated that above. I think most people need to stop taking everything as racism and see it for what it is. its a beautiful wonderful add that really does do it job.

Umm...both? We never really know.

I saw another segment on the news during lunch (now it's getting way outta hand) and they had local college students discuss why people don't see it (the racism). One girl said, "They're probably not black and they don't understand what black people went through. They're just naive". Um, hello?! WTF?!

I'm going to do more research on my local news website

I'll try to find some sort of article or summary on the segments they've shown.

I found it, I found it. Right here.
Here are others too:1, 2, 3, & 4.

Apparently some type of organization (don't remember the name) is trying to stop the ad from reaching the United States by starting petitions and such because of the "obvious" racism.

That'd probably be the NAACP

It's just a fucking mock-ad!!!!!! (and a clever one at that) When I first saw it, I was like, well, okay...there's gotta be more to it than that...And there is!!! It's the media, AGAIN...bringing all this shit to light so they can pick it apart. When I saw the other part of the ad (black gal on white gal)...and then the Nintendo ad, I said..."Ohhhh....now I get it"....I knew it wasn't what it seemed to be. Some people (hint hint...media)...need to get a life.

i absolutely loooooooooooooooooooove this ad it is so insane hoe they made her translucent (the white one hahaha) and they just super glossed and polish the black model....the makeup adn thought that went into the artistry of these adds are just amazing

i personally am not offended in anyway...i agree it gets ppl thinking and i think some ppl are just so quick to have negative connotations toward everything....my goodness it's a game console it was a cool idea....people need to calm down and stop reading negativity into everything

I think since the ad was in Holland that the advertisers saw the art of product and of the photo. I don't think Sony will have the same advertisement in the States because other countries are known to have more provocative ads that are "controversal" in the states .

I, myself being of African American decent am not offended because there is nothing deeper in the billboard other than " the new sony playstation will be featured in another color" regardless of the controversy.. I don't think anyone is going to stop buying a new playstation because of the ad.

I don't think it's racist it all, I can see why some people might see it and shout racism, but probably only because they don't understand

No, I don't think it's racist at all. The only reason it's going to be considered racist by any stretch of the imagination is because it involves a white and a black person. If it was a Korean girl and an Italian girl, people wouldn't even look twice. Why? Because no one gets their panties in a knot about Italians or Koreans.

Even if it is slightly racist, did it ever occur to anyone that it is a blantantly obvious publicity stunt? Think of ALL the free advertising they got by that show airing stuff about the add... and all the people reacting to it.

Stop taking the bait people...

I have looked at that ad on several occasions. There is a website I check out everyday which is where I first saw the pic. The comments people made were interesting and I agree with a lot of what they had to say. The ad does make me uncomfortable. That is my first and natural reaction. It just conjures up tooo many negative images in my head. I will say that when I see the other pics from that photoshoot it puts things in better perspective but were those images going to be used for the campaign as well? I am on the fence as to whether this is subtly racist or just ill conceived.

It makes me think, why aren't there two white chicks or two black chicks, or whatever, with one in all white and the other in all black? Why does this black woman look like a slave? Why does the black model seem so submissive and the white one so incredibly aggresive and dominant? Mostly it makes me think, "is this an issue of race that doesn't have to be and in looking at it as art or clever marketing we are moving forward past race being such a prevalent issue?" Or, "is the fact that people choose to ignore something that is potentially so racist a sign that we are moving backward?" I don't know.

But I do agree that SONY could not have been oblivious to the controversy that this would cause. I think they are relishing it. It's good publicity.
