To Depot or Not to Depot - That is the Question

I depot EVERYTHING inlcuding my NARS e/s and blushes...LOL! Everything goes into a palette, I hate keeping individual pots lying about, and its so much easier to reach for the palette

Storage was becoming an issue for me though - prior to that I didnt depot anything.

So far, I've only bought Pro pans.

I like that I can see the shadows all together in a palette, they're also more affordable ($11.00 each), and the fact that it's less packaging makes me feel better.

I don't have a pro store super close, but I'll plan a trip to one and that's when I get the shadows I want. It's good because it keeps me from buying too much and really makes me think of which shadows I really want and which shadows I can do without (at least for a little longer).

i kept my eyeshadows in pots for ages as i do thin they look lovely in the pots, but i found it was getting harder to see what i had each time so ended up depotting them, i used the straightening iron method and it was really quick and simple and i have mine in 4 e/s pallettes now but am now ready for my first 15 e/s pallette.

I depot, and have 6 palettes so far (not are all filled) that I arrange by color (blues, greens, neutrals, silvers/blacks, pinks/purple, reds/orange/yellows). I love being able to pull out one thing and see all the colors right there. And I think it makes traveling easier because I can grab just one or two colors groups, and I think they take up less room than all the pots would in luggage.

I go as far as depotting the pre made quads that I have. I just have a thing for everything being in one spot. I figured out I was neglecting the quads because they weren't in the main palettes.

As for depotting, just go slow and be careful. I've never broken/cracked one yet, even after sending a pan flying across the kitchen.

If you have any lipsticks, lipglosses or powders in clam compacts (such as bronzer, beauty powder, etc), then you still have some of the packaging to hang on to and love, and you can depot your shadows and blushes reasonably guilt-free.

Also how would you suggest to do an e/s pallette? by color? by favourite e/s? by use?

I've never depotted, and am considering for space's sake and B2M...

My cat sent a couple of my palettes flying one day, and a few things cracked, but it wasn't bad. I used the rubbing alcohol to get them to go back together and it's been all good.

I'm a newbie. I love depotting now.. that I'm done. LOL! I used EnKore's no heat method and ruined so many.. I was turned off by depotting so other ones I just left alone. I watched MakeupGeek's with a flat iron and I depotted the rest perfectly! I even depotted one with a mirror and 7 shadows that was at least from like 02-03.. but it had some faves that I had recently ordered the pans for so it was worth it. I depotted a quad with the youtube video and now I think I'm a depotting genius..lol. I have two e/s palettes and two blush palettes now.

I'm putting the ones I messed up in a coastal scents palette..as they don't make the cut to go into the mac palette..lol.

Do you ever have any problems with the fall out from shadows ending up in other colors? My bisque e/s is spreading all over the place right now...

^^ that is one of the reasons I was happy to finally group mine by colors, so it's not as a big deal if a bit of fallout happens between two blues vs. like a white and a blue. Ricepaper is the only one that got really messy on me, though.

I love having my eyeshadows depotted, I find I use the colours more, I'm waiting to get more magnets before I depot some more. But i'm planning to do all my le shadows (they aren't getting any love not being in a pallet) and all my blushers next. I love the pallets now.

what are you storing your Nars stuff in?

I depot all e/s but limited edition, I leave my quads I think they are perfect for traveling

I was a depoting novice but I used a heating gun, broke none of the e/s and only the first pot I did was screwed up enough that it wouldn't close.

mmmm i just started depotting and now allmy shadows are depotted except for chrome yellow and nylon that i got today- because i reallllly need to order another pro pallet. I just got super excited the day i got mine and depotting was so easy that i friggin depotted all of them and didnt think of the fact that i didnt have another pallet to put the other 10 in. LMAO.

I just started depotting mine because it's a lot easier to carry around in palette form and it saves a lot of space in my makeup organizer. Also the whole B2M thing, the only ones i don't depot are the special editions ones with the different packaging.

I depotted like 20 e/s last night- you guys are right, it IS addicting! I want to do all of them, but I only have palette room for like 40 more e/s, so I'm going to have to get at least 5 more palettes before I do all of them! I just want to organize them by color but I can't yet. :*(

I used to be anti-depot. But you just get to a point where it's too hard to manage all those individual pots. I never depot quads or trios though. I like to remember how those were designed to be paired up.

exactly the same... I just sold a self made quad today, I had trouble remembering the names of the colors were actually under the pan since that was my first and only palette, I have seen some depotting youtube tutorials but for now I feel too clumsy to depot from pots, I'd rather buy refills and those are cheaper anyway :p

What do you think are pros/cons to depotting?

Pros for me are:
-Cost (if you buy in pan) is less
-Saves storage space
-Great for travel, so they're all in one place
-B2M!

Cons:
-The risk of breaking shadows during depot
-Having to carry around a huge palette when you just want one color

if you are worried about carrying the whole palette for travel you can buy an empty quad and put in the colors you want to take with you. An empty quad is $3.50 I think.
Wow you have 100 individuals!! that's awesome.

The good part to depotting is that you can use all the things that the shadow comes out of to get new eye shadows. Remember back to mac?

! Just think how many more shadows you can have!!!! aaaaaah heaven!!

^^ I know, I bought I think around 14 e/s from the 25% off sale- they were around the price of the pans, but with the containers that I can b2m.

Last night I finished depotting what I could fit in my palettes - about 75 e/s in total. I do need some advice though:

- How do you apply the labels? What's the best way to keep the names on them, on the bottom, or in the lid? I have temporarily placed all the names on the lid to correspond with the e/s, but it looks messy and unprofessional.

- Do you use anything to protect your hands from getting sore from all the depotting? Mine were feeling a little burned/sore from prying and touching hot plastic.

I found this great little hole punch tool @ Michael's that cuts out 1" circles. So I use it to cut a perfectly sized magnet (from those self adhesive magnetic sheets) for the bottom of the pan. Then I heat the glue on the bottom of the eyeshadow pot where the label is so I can peel it off & stick it to the magnet. It works perfectly.

I only buy the pro-pans but for LE ones I would depot them I guess; I quite like having palletes but I prefer 4 over 15 because of the clear lids.
