What is/was your ideal engagement ring?

I was reading the thread in the main Chatter subforum about diamonds, and it made me think about what everyone's ideal engagement ring is or was. Since I found out about the situation with the diamond monopoly I haven't been interested in having a diamond engagement ring. I think I'd like pearl, because that's my birthstone and I think pearls are gorgeous. Maybe some little cubic zirconia around it. Anyone else?

i vacillate between wanting to wear one and not wanting to. here are some of my thoughts...when i think of engagement rings i think about the legal and historical significance (we're just chattel, honey). that's a turn off. i tell my boyfriend if i'm wearing one, he needs to wear one, too. that being said, i feel there is a lot of social pressure and significance placed on it, maybe too much to ignore? i've had people grab my and ask where my ring was and stuff like that gets to me.

my friend got married in october, she didn't have an engagement ring, and when people would ask her why she'd say she didn't support the diamond industry right now.

i had another friend do a 7 karat peridot. it was gorgeous. i'm thinking i'd enjoy a platinum or white gold set princess or cushion cut. i flirted with the heart cut for a little while, and then decided maybe not. but it is a super cute cut... :-/

what's in style now anyway? sex and the city still has me turning my nose up at pear shapes and yellow gold.

Mmm.. I don't have one haha. But I think I'm too young to be thinking about engagement and things like that. I don't think I'd really care if I even had one or not and who knows, I might be the one proposing to my fiance in the future! haha. I'd love to have a nice, cheesy, soapy, oh-so-romantic proposal and what not, but my boyfriend (being the practical and totally UNromantic person that he is lol j/k j/k) opened my eyes into seeing that things like that aren't really important.

But I would still like one. *falls over laughing. Anything is fine with me, as long as it's not too big and gaudy looking.. I don't think I could stand a HUGE ASS diamond/gem on my finger, but some people like that so oh well.

I love the look of vintage platinum settings and asscher cut diamonds, so that is my *ideal* ring. The size doesn't matter so much as long as the setting is gorgeous.

ETA: I really only like the settings where there are NO prongs, and the diamond is fully encased in the setting. I wish I could find a picture online that illustrated this. I love my grandmother's ring, hers is in this style, and I want mine to look very similar (hers is broken =[)

i wanted an australian or canadian diamond (if diamond was going to be chosen), and was happy to consider any gems. size was always immaterial.

the design i wanted was a princess cut centre gem with two emerald cut side gems.

i speak in past tense because i know that when the time comes i'm going to get something different... and i don't mind a bit.

I have had mine picked out since I was 13 lol. I saw it at Tiffany's and just fell in love...it's just a simple platinum band with a nice sized circle cut diamond. I love it! Mine doesn't have to be from Tiffany's, I'd take any ring and would be totally happy. I would also really love the same setting but with a yellow or pink circular diamond.

I love rings! my mom and I were talking about this today actually lol.

I'm going to get a Canadian diamond for sure. I just want a simple diamond solitaire. I think I want the ring itself to be platinum, and definitely with a six prong head because I want a round stone. (I think round stones look best with six prongs). Not that I've thought about this a lot or anything

A 7 carat square cut flawless diamond set in platinum with 2 side triangular baguettes (optional). You can surprise me with a colored diamond if you like.

I always wanted a platinum, emerald cut ring. Something that look old.

When I did get engaged, I got my fiancee's grandmother's ring. It is a round cut solitare in a gold setting. I love it. It is so delicate and perfect because of the history with it.

My wedding ring is going to have two rubies around the diamond.

I *love* my engagement ring. I picked it out, actually. It's a 3/8 c diamond in a cathedral setting with white gold. It's simple but beautiful.

If I could have ANY ring in the whole wide world, it would be a Tiffany Novo engagement ring....sooo gorgeous. But their SMALLEST diamond (1/4 c) starts at something like $3,800! No thanks.

I think I had picked out a ring to fall in love with before i found the man.

In all seriousness, I do have a ring in mind. It is a tacori platinum and diamond ring with a 2 karat diamond in the center and 1 karat of surrounding stones. The ring is obviously not cheap- but it is so up my alley that its not even funny. It is beautiful, elegant, and has a vintage feel to it (in my mind at least) I have even tried it on and it is just too beautiful for words.

Matter of fact, here it is.

For the longest time, like ever since I was about 7, I did NOT want a yellow gold engagement ring. Instead, I wanted something in silver, platinum, or white gold. And since I was about thirteen I have been in love with jewel in nature designs, so I think my ideal ring would have some sort of ivy/leaf/tree design, whether by etching or metalwork, with small opal accents in different varieties.

Or, the other thing I would love would be a simple celtic knot band that is like a braid around my finger to symbolize how our lives are entwined together. Sigh, sometimes I can be so cheesy!

My fiance and have custom designed my e-ring and it will be done in 2 weeks. It is a 3-stone emerald cut ring in platinum. We picked out the stones and designed the setting together and make the process even more romantic and fun! And emerald cut is for sure my favorite shape diamond!!

I always really wanted a round sapphire set really simply, like a diamond solitaire.

The jeweler told DH that a round cut isn't optimal for sapphires, so he got me this instead:

So my engagement ring is two pieces. One is a diamond solitaire (not a blood diamond - predates DeBeers) and a wrap made of really dark tanzanites. I looooooove it. I'm thinking of asking him to take it and have it turned into one ring with the tanzanites set right next to the diamond.
