My now fiancee and I had a long discussion about it. I personally don't like diamonds unless they're colored ones. i love Heidi klums diamond ring because of the color. however, a diamonds' too pricey in my opinion for a ring, no matter how symbolic it is. i wanted something beautiful that i'd be comfortable walking around with-not a pricey rock.I also thought paying 4000 euros and above for a ring was ridiculous because that's an amount you can get a car with if translated into Kenyan shillings!
I ended up getting an amethyst. i am in love with my ring and I've gotten several compliments on it. when i talk to my friends about the kind of engagement ring they want, they inevitably talk about getting a diamond. i sometimes think that many women say they want one because it is "normal'' or you're expected to want one. I find that sad really, because a diamond may be beautiful, however i think an engagement ring should speak to the wearer's personal style rather than the societal norms.
