What is/was your ideal engagement ring?

I don't have a ring in mind (I do have an idea for a wedding ring, should I ever get married), but you know you can get diamonds that are non-blood diamonds, unless you simply hate the culture of diamonds. There are conflict-free diamonds available, you can get an old diamond reset, etc.

I know that, but the fact that diamond companies created this societal expectation of having a "diamond" ring when you get engaged in order to bump up the demand/price, even though it was never a tradition before... I don't like it and I don't want to be a part of it.

Have any of you ever heard about that thing where .. when you die or if someone close to you dies they get cremated and their ashes get put into a diamond or create a diamond and you can wear it as a ring:| i might not be 100% correct but thats basically what it is...
its like wearing a dead body on your finger!

yep - it's LifeGem.

Welcome to the LifeGem Home - Memorial Diamonds created from a lock of hair or cremated remains / ashes / cremation

the carbon is captured from some of the cremated remains, or alternatively from a lock of hair.

it's a very interesting idea. especially interesting that it can be done with hair... you could get a diamond made from the hair of your partner and put it in a wedding band or special ring. now that is kind of cool - a modern twist on the old practices of keeping a lock of hair from your loved one.

wow its expensive to turn ashes into Diamonds (as I thought it would be) but I think its a really neat idea. If i was a millionaire.. I might consider it.

you can do it for pets as well.

My husband let me pick mine out. He did a good job of making it sound like it wasn't the one I was going to get, since he's a saver, not a spender. Anyway, this is what he surprised me with:
FOTDs.jpg

It's a princess-cut center stone with princess-cut channel set side stones. The wedding band is a 3/4 eternity band with round diamonds in a shared setting, so they end up looking like they're princess cut.
Now I'm just working on gettin' my upgrade, lol!!

A three-stone diamond ring. Although, like anything I wear, it has to be unique in some way. It can't just look like a boring, traditional diamond ring (I guess I am sort of cliché for wanting a diamond ring in the first place but hey, a girl's allowed--I don't even own any diamonds of any kind). Anyone I marry will know this anyway. :p Oh, and no gold whatsoever because I don't wear it. Silver, platinum or white gold. I'm not set in stone about it being three diamond, so if something unique and beautiful that is not three-stone is what I get, so be it.

My engagement ring was a 1-carat diamond set in a classic Tiffany's platinum ring. I never wear it because I have small fingers and the diamond looks huge. It also sticks out quite a bit and gets caught on everything when I'm doing work or getting in the mud. So... I keep it safe at home so that it doesn't get lost or dirty when I'm working.

) but im starting to like jewelry more and thinking of wedding rings so now my dream ring is a yellow canary diamond with little diamonds surrounding it and a band with tiny diamonds around the band. so he is getting it for me this year

My engagement ring is a 3/4 carat princess cut in cathedral setting and my wedding band is an anniversary band with 1/2 carat tw princess cut diamonds in a band that follows the cathedral setting. The two links below in yellow gold. I like the cathedral setting because I feel less like I'm always smacking it on stuff like the ring I used to have.

Oh, and apparently this photo from my wedding is still available. Not the best picture... probably why I didn't bother purchasing this one.

my ideal is something simple. Definitely something platinum or white gold just not yellow gold. And I think I may be one of few who doesn't want a hugeeee diamond lol. I would rather have a couple smaller diamonds around the band with one a little larger in the middle, if that makes sense.

a square cut yellow diamond in white gold. I'd prefer a coloured diamond since flawless diamonds look cold to me... and oh yes, BIG.

I'm perfectly willing to pay for part of it if that's how the money works out when the time comes, but if I have one piece of flashy jewellery, my engagement ring should be it.

I want a tension-set ring, preferably with a thinner band made of titanium or white gold. A non-diamond ring would be really cool - maybe a ruby, since red is my favorite color.

I don't want a flashy ring, just something that looks really cool and that I have some kind of connection to.

My engagement ring was my grandmother's, given to her in England in the 1950's. I love it sooooo much. I'd have to say it is my ideal, because I can't dream up one that I would adore any more than this.

I wear it with one sapphire guard ring:

One of my coworkers had a tension set ring that was asymmetrical. It was eyecatching because it was so different. One warning though is that they really aren't able to be resized by more than 1/4 size up or down. So basically the ring would have to be recreated if you needed more than that amount of sizing.

I've always felt that diamonds are overpriced, so I didn't get an engagement ring. However, nowadays high quality *real* diamonds can be created in labs. The only difference between these and the natural diamonds is simply that the lab diamonds are not mined. Not only are they more affordable, but it's also so much easier to obtain a colored diamond this way. Perhaps I'll look for a dark blue one for a future anniversary. :)
