I'm not a palera yet..... I really don't have the time and dedication to become one yet but my godmother said whenever I'm ready just to let her know....

Not too many people that I know have heard of this & we are taught not to discuss it with the general public because people automatically assimilate us with voodoo & they don't understand the difference.

Here is a link to some background info for anyone interested.

In the same vein, I'm studying Santeria. but because of the reasons stated above, I'm having a hard time finding a madrina or padrino.

My great uncle is a hounsis, not quite a houngan yet ( vodoun priest). And a number of my uncles and a few cousins are ordained Baptist ministers. I was raised Baptist, and out of respect and familiarity, I attend services at my family's "home" church from time to time. Many of my family members practice Islam, as well. I guess I just have a pretty diverse family background, LOL. we all manage to get along well, thank goodness.

I actually will attend services with almost anyone, if they ask me to. I really enjoy services at a friend's Methodist church. I just do not feel connected with Christianity in many ways. If one was to take a gander at my bookshelf at home they'd have absolutely no clue of what my spiritual leanings are; the texts I read are pretty diverse. However, my spirit is most definitely in tune with African/Afro-Carribean/Afro-American religion. More specifically, Santeria.

I'm another one of the forgotten Jews

There's Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox streams. Increasingly, there's also Reconstructionist and progressive: here in NZ the Reforms and Reconstructionists seem to have merged to become "progressives."

Reform Judaism doesn't really seem to exist outside the United States; I attend Reform services when I'm there if I bother to go at all. Which isn't very often, because I'm pretty lax in my observance. I kept kosher for a few years, then reached the conclusion that if G-d really exists he would probably prefer that I be less wasteful and not have enough kitchen utensils for 4 families. And I can't speak or read Hebrew at all. Chanukkah, Rosh Hoshanah, Yom Kippur, and the first two days of Passover is about it for me now

I editted the poll to add Orthodox and Judaism. Had to put Orthodox under Catholic bc there's a limit of poll options.

Also, what is "secular"....that's not a religion really, is it? I thought it meant dividing state and religion.

I don't think it matters what you are as long as you believe in something positive.
Being a good person is #1.
Sorry, I'm not religious. However, I was raised Jewish

Kind of like Stacylynne's post below. She appears to be technically Jewish, but she's nonreligious. Some of the lapsed Catholics can also be described as secular, as could the nonpracticing Muslims or anybody else.

To me, secular means that you have some religious affiliation, but you are basically nonpracticing. But the actual definition is in the eye of the beholder: most Orthodox Jews would consider me to be secular, while many Reforms would probably consider me to moderately observant.

And thanks for editing the poll. I will go vote now.......

I was raised Catholic, converted to Baptist, now I don't attend church but consider myself a Christian. Needless to say, I didn't answer the poll because I have no idea where I fit in there.

LOL.

I felt like saying that to the JW that came to my door the other day just to get a rise but I just didn't have the heart to. I just told them "I've done my research and I just don't find 'it' to be credible" LMAO The end.
