To say that people who don't believe in God can't learn things from the bible is hypocritical and stupid, to say the least.

Your last statement is what’s “hypocritical and stupid”. Why would someone who doesn’t believe in God want to learn anything from the Bible? The Bible is not just any book, it is a Holy Book which is sacred to those that follow and believe in it. The Bible contains religious texts which are meant for the worship of God. We do not have readings from just any book in Church, they are just from the Bible.
So from my point of view I guess I should assume that if an Atheist is reading the Bible, to learn lessons from it, they are worshiping the very God they do not believe in.
And actually you had said something about what I believe in when you insinuated that certain Commandments are applicable to everyone but others like the one I initially mentioned are not. I was simply letting you know that that is not how it works for us “the believers”, we can not pick and choose and nor should anyone else especially those that do not even believe in God in the first palce.
No one is saying you must start believing in God to read the Bible but do not take something that is sacred and start saying that people can pick and choose what they want to believe and follow and caste aside what they do not. That is not how my religion works which I’m sure is the reason a lot of people have a problem with it.
Moreover, my initial statement was not made to you so why have you taken it upon yourself to so vehemently defend someone else? I would call that the Christian thing to do just like what am I doing, defending my religion, beliefs and Bible.

I was raised Protestant (Presbyterian) but I rarely go to church (mainly due to specific things that happened at my particular church). If I do go to church, I tend to go to Mass with my husband who is Catholic. I still believe in God and pray, but I don't think I need to be in a church to worship, pray and be thankful for what I have.

First of all,

there are many people who were raised in christian based homes but chose another religion for themselves as they grew older. So they already know the teachings of the bible, they don't have to read it again. There are also people who have never read the bible, but know about the 10 Commandments through either the movie or word of mouth.

Secondly,

I commented on your point of view being hypocritical and stupid because, being a good christian and all, you shouldn't tell people they shouldn't be reading the bible just because they don't believe in god. Really! Isn't that contradictory to your "duties"? It's stupid to believe that there's no purpose in a nonbeliever reading the bible, and that they are trying to serve god just because they are reading it. IT'S A BOOK!!! Not everyone sees it as a master plan. To people who don't believe in god, it's just another fictional book. There are lessoned to learn from just about ANY BOOK, and that includes the bible.

this is why i don't believe in religion, namely organized religion. it TELLS you what to think/believe, instead of letting you decide for yourself.

1) Yes, that’s all well and good however I will repeat that I was simply stating that if one wants to follow the 10 Commandments they should not pick 3 or 4 of the 10 as they are all meant to be followed in totality. Moreover, if one has shed their Christianity then I, in MY OPINION (which I am entitled to am I not?), find it hypocritical that they would still want to follow something that is intrinsic to being a Christian. But like I said that is my opinion.

2) As a good Catholic I am sick and tired of hearing people put down my Religion (I have read a lot of anti-Catholic sentiments in other posts here as well). And what do you know about my duties? Am I not doing my duty in defending something I hold sacred? If you want to believe that the Bible is just a book that’s fine, but just like you’ve voiced your opinion on the Bible I am voicing mine. You seem so insulted by what I have stated about my views but now you are insulting me and every other Christian by calling my Holy Book “fiction” and I suppose Jesus is just a figment of my imagination too? If you are so interested in learning lessons from the Bible then why don’t you crack one open or better yet join a Church. There, have I done my “duty” now?

3) Exactly!! I am free to comment then am I not?? And how have I insulted you? Because I choose to tell you about my beliefs? Isn’t that what everyone else who is posting here doing?

And that is totally fine. I just happen to have faith in my Religion and I honestly do not feel that I am being told what to think/believe. I, in my own opinion, feel that you either take it all or nothing at all.

i have never read the bible, and never plan on it. imo, its just a book. someone else wrote it, based on what someone else said, based on what someone else, based one what someone else said, etc. but, can you not have a fictional book about a real person? just a question in regards to your statement. no offense intended.

i think people have the right to believe what they want to believe, so i respect you for that. but doesn't this take away your ability to think what you want to think? my co-worker is catholic, and she doesn't use birth control. when i asked her why, she said "cause i'm catholic." not "cause i don't agree with it", or "cause i think what happens is suppose to happen." to me "cause i'm catholic" says: catholicism (sp?) says that i can't take birth control.
shrugs.gif

i'm sure there are catholics out there that use birth control. so, in your opinion, they wouldn't be true catholics? just cause they aren't following the religion in whole? and are there exceptions? i have to take birth control for medical reasons. if a catholic were in the same shoes as me, where do they stand in the eyes of the church? again, just questions that i'm sure others have. this is why people should be able to pick and choose what they want to believe in, and not believe in it as a whole, just because that's what their religion tells them to believe in.

I agree, if you don't believe what I believe, which is Catholicism, why do you feel the need to say something bad about it? Nobody is forcing it on you, you don't believe in it, end of story, no need to be rude about it.

You haven't insulted me, at least I don't feel that you have.

Being that I was raised in a strongly Christian family, I have read a majority of the bible, and I was "joined" with a church until I detached myself. I found it all to be bullshit. Yes, you've done your duty. You've further pressed my opinions on religion and the people who follow it.

And yes, I also believe that Jesus is a figment of your imagination.

I always say:

I am not religious. I am not anti-religious.

I was not raised in a religion, and my parents aren't religious people.
I definitely think that religions great for many people
In a way I feel myself to be too scientifically favoring (by that I mean, in my life I always feel as if I look to scientific facts to give me answers, aka I believe in evolution, etc). So I don't feel as if I could worship someone that I couldn't see or have scientific facts to prove they are there, I guess thats what I'm saying, I kind of typed that awkwardly!

Any ways, like I said, I am not religious - I am not anti-religious
To each their own, I think its great for those who are into it.
smiles.gif

Who knows, maybe one day I will find a religion that clicks with me.
I definitely think everyone needs something to believe in, though.

None taken.
I suppose you can have a fictional book about a real person but the Bible is not just about one person and although it may have been passed thru word-of-mouth until it was written down that does not make it fiction. I mean how often do we believe gossip? It's passed thru word-of-mouth but most of us believe what we hear don't we? And sometimes we even believe what we read ie. in tabloids. We don't seem to question those as often as we question the Bible.
Also the New Testament contains letters that were written by the Apostles themselves, so it wasn't all word-of mouth.

As for the issue about birth control, I guess that is an issue of morals. Yes, the Catholic Church is against birth control (however we are allowed to practice natural family planning as a form of birth control and obviously only after marriage) but like you said I'm sure there are a lot of Catholics who use it. I would think in the eyes of the Church that wouldn't mean they are not true Catholics but rather sinners. Atleast, that's what I think the Church would think of me if I took BC. Now, is that taking away my ability to think for myself? I don't think so because I can still take it if I choose to, just like a Catholic person for eg. can steal something. It does not mean they are no longer Catholic, it just means they have sinned. As for taking it for medical reasons, I honestly do not know the answer to that.

And I truly do not feel anyone is telling me what to believe in nor have I ever felt it forced upon me. I believe what I believe because I choose to believe it.

I was being sarcastic in telling you to join a Church, it is not my place to tell you that nor is it my duty.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. You have your reasons for leaving your Church and I have my reasons for continuing to follow mine. That wasn't even the issue we were discussing but I guess there is no point in going any further because neither of us will back off with respect to what we believe.

And as for Jesus, I sincerely hope that you are not a figment of His.

Man, we are discussing the three unmentionables all at once aren't we? Religion, Politics....and what was the other one? I was gonna say abortion but I think I'm wrong?
lol.gif
Well still! We are just bringing them all out at the same time ehh?

I'm a Christian. I have not completely devoted myself to religion or church...I have trouble understanding many things and I just haven't made that step quite yet? But I am saved. I just really don't worry about what someone else is doing. Just live your life, and I'll live mine. I am one of those people...who will never understand why people get so worked up about things that don't really pertain to them. Oh well...thats life.

And tomorrow, we are soooooo dry shaving your eyebrows off and re-drawing them with a sharpie! So bring your razor damn it!

I am more spiritual than I am religious. I have no problems with religion because I like that in some attempt it teaches people to be better. I just kind of live with my own morals and ethics - wherever they may come from. It's just the way I fiercely believe in behaving that I had no doubt in my mind what constitutes "good" or "right" (for me at least). In the end I think all paths lead to the same destination and there is no way to know for sure where that destination is.
