Boys In Make-Up...opinions.

UH OH! You've started something here!!! I LOVE any form of freedom/expression through art and feel that one of the most immediate and obvious ways to do this is through make up! I hate to say it but I have to agree that alot of people that have STRONG views against men in make up tend to be like you said, from strong religious backgrounds, secluded from cosmopoliton areas or not really aware of cultures. I grew up in the UK, then had to move to Texas and then moved back here after awhile. In Texas there were some STRONG views and I often found that it was very hard to fit in. I think that there are people like a lot of us that think make up is fun and expressive and the more colourfull the world is the better! and then there are people with a conservative view on things and whom probably think that what a mac artist does is not to be looked at as an art or whatever.

My Dad grew up in the 80's and was a bit of a punk, he often wore black eyeliner, my mom is your typical and i don't mean this expression in an offense to anyone 'fag hag'... she loves the extravegant and flamboyant and both of them were seriously into there art stuff. I guess I just feel like pink eyeshadow is fun and not something to look down on weather it be a boy or a girl wearing it.

I can't help but feel VERY STRONGLY annoyed by people with these opinions that men in makeup is wrong. I think it shows a lack of education/lack of culture and a very shallow minded outset on life. ???

Not that I'd want my bf to start wearing my make up! I don't think I'd like to share it! LOL.

Why, I can't tell you. I'm just not. It's mainly for the same reason I've learned to avoid certain women's FOTD threads. It just does nothing for me.

But I'm not going to rain on their parade, you know? Go for it.

I don't understand why you wouldnt. They're fab!

I don't really care about it. I mean, do whatever you want! And some guys are way better in applying make up than girls

It's funny you brought this up. Not so much about guys wearing makeup but about the area of that woman from the midwest and her negative thoughts on the subject. I live in south western Pennsylvania and it's rural. In my neighborhood not one woman wears makeup let alone a guy. These women don't even put on a little lip gloss. I never saw such a thing! I'm originally from NY and it shocks me no one wears makeup. I wear makeup and I love it. It's fun, it makes me feel better about myself and I like the way I look. I have a good bit of makeup. Of course I don't get any compliments because like I said no one wears it. I would love to have a friend that was into makeup so we could play around with different looks and stuff. My town is just plain weird.

Another sidenote. Where do people get off acting like that? Do they know nothing of Shakespeare? Where women werent even allowed to be in his original works? It was men who dressed as women...Makeup, wigs and all! There was no question of right or wrong - it was as it was. Every play consisted of men in womens roles...No difference from any man that goes on stage now either...
You sound really cool! What do you think about transsexuals?

A lot of people consider makeup to be exclusively for girls, but I think attitudes are slowly changing, for the best. It goes without saying that as a MUA, makeup, regardless of gender, is just part of the job, a fact of life. I do not even give a guy a second glance if he's wearing makeup; it's a personal decision and realistically they have every right to do what they want, like all women have that same right too. I may have preferences as to what I'd like a guy to be like in terms of a relationship, but this isn't the same as saying I think that guys should all *be* a certain way. Some are and some aren't. Simple as that. A person should just be themselves and enjoy what they want, without being caged.

I think a big problem that we face today is being restricted by social constructs. Even from a young age, we're led into interests that your parents/carers feel are appropriate, play with only toys you're given (barbies vs action men), an effect reinforced through stereotypes, popular media and other people. I'm not saying that differences between gender is necessarily a bad thing; I see that men and women can have unique roles within society, but I don't think there should be "restrictions" based upon what people feel is "right" or "wrong". For anyone who thinks a guy shouldn't wear makeup, the only real reason they could possibly come up with is that they feel it's "wrong". If we want to move closer towards equality as a race of *people* and not be divided by all our differences, then we should start to overlook the interests of others and condemn the restrictions, which often express themselves in the form of discrimination somewhere along the line. Cue comments like, "It's gay* for men to wear makeup", "men make bad parents", "women shouldn't work" or "girls shouldn't play sports". It bugs me because it's pretty much the main source of discrimination, including discrimination against women.

So please, for all you girls out there, take care not to discriminate against other people, even if you're just expressing your distaste for guys who wear makeup. It's one thing to hold an opinion or preference, but it's another thing to enforce/express social restrictions, based upon your opinions/preferences. If you want to discriminate, don't feel offended when someone discriminates against you, because it happens to every single one of us throughout our lives and is still a very real problem.

But yes! On a personal level I don't mind if guys wear makeup or not; it doesn't affect my attraction towards them in particular. Some guys look really hot with a little makeup in my opinion.

I've heard women saying not only is it sick but if her bf wears more makeup than she does it's wrong. Also, makeup is our stuff and men need to leave it alone. I've also heard men need to look like men and women need to look like women.

Hey Lori, I know a lot of women who still feel that way, but I think we may be progressing generally in terms of what we can/can't do as people. I wouldn't particularly like my bf to wear lots of makeup, because that's my own preference in men, but I would not hold it against that person and it's not really a big deal to me. I personally feel that if we decide to incarcerate guys for wearing makeup, then we'll also be incarcerated and restricted as women, who will not be able to do the same activities that men do. I for one do not like being told I can't do something simply because I'm a girl (such as vote).

That's true and I agree with you. I've never seen a guy wear makeup where I live. I live in south western PA and people here aren't progressive. It's like they are stuck in the 1950's. I am originally from NY and here in the town where I live women don't wear makeup let alone men. I never saw anything like it. Not even a little lip gloss. I wear it all. I don't care. It's fun, makes me feel better about myself and I enjoy it. I just don't feel like I'm dressed without it. Pittsburgh is about 2 hours away from me and it's a whole different world. Though I've never seen a man wear makeup I do see women wearing it. I wish I had a friend that enjoyed wearing makeup so we could get together and have something in common. It's weird here. If you don't drink, fight and do drugs they call guys gay. It's weird. I hope one day I am able financially to move out of this area. In the mean time, I'll be wearing my makeup feeling good about myself! lol

I know that I am very late in weighing in on this post but I'll add my two cents.

Having spent time in New York, I think that I have experienced or seen almost anything and nearly all of it
has been acceptable. I feel as though none of us have been put on this earth to judge others lest we be judged.
I'm not religious at all however, I find the latter a statement worthy of incorporating in to my life.

If boys want to wear makeup, I say go for it! If it makes them feel good, why not? I don't see a problem with
that at all. The nature of almost all cultures is very masculine and although the majority of people will have
a comment or opinion, at the end of the day, who are they to judge.

Rock on boys in makeup!!

As long as I don't have to kiss a guy with more gloss than mine.. or matte even

I dunno - I got a great near-ombre lip look this way once. Some edge clean up required. :p

Makeup is for anyone that wants to wear it, as far as I'm concerned. I also think that there are certain places and social groups that place pressure on women to wear makeup and that's not cool, either. Wear or it don't, it should be totally up to you. (And personally, a perfectly arched eyebrow, killer liner, and the best groomed beard you've ever seen? My attention, they have it.)

I attended college in Pgh & from NY as well & I one day found myself in Latrobe? I think but pretty rural area outside of Pgh & yes no makeup, they don't even look presentable @ work. I will add that pgh females do wear makeup and from what I've seen some are pretty bold, blue lipstick (daytime) and bolder lipstick. I do find it weird when women 30 and above don't wear any makeup, not a lipgloss, mascara, lipstick, blush, zilch nada. I mean mascara really opens up your eyes, a little bit of makeup makes you look polish.

I've also had boyfriends in the past who even had the same favorite eyeliner as me, they were in glam metal bands so it was the image they were going for but I think it's such a neat bond

Haha! Yeah I know where Latrobe is. Isn't it so weird no one wears makeup though? I don't get it. So are you still in Pgh?

Exactly! Women should be able to do anything they want. There was a time women weren't allowed to wear slacks only skirts and dresses. I wear what I want. I live in a rural area in Pennsylvania and I hate it lol. I need to move and I will be soon but the people's views on things are so outdated in my town. It's like living in the '50's. There's guys that still think doing dishes is women's work lol. and that women should wait on their man and the women do it too! Oh well, if they are happy I guess but I sure wouldn't be.

Some use bronzing powders Guerlain has a Terracotta for men. If men want to use makeup I am not against it, well why not ?
