(maybe its just me lol)

Plus I'm a newbie, I don't have a license or anything like that. I've only done my own make up and my friends. I do have a strong background in art, I've painted for many years. But becoming a makeup artist is something that I've always felt I wanted to do, especially to work for MAC! I just love love love there products! I dont have a portfolio or anything like that, only regular pics of looks that I've done for competitions on youtube.

Should I stop by the mac counter and ask to speak to the manager? What should I ask or say? Should I dress a certain way? (I know lots of Q's) I would love some advice, tips or suggestions.

I posted some of the pictures I mention before and a pic of the makeup I did on a friend. I would really love your honest opinion. Please let me know what I need to improve on. There is always room for improvement! :)

Thank you!

Kangelmakeup,
You are certainly not alone in feeling intimidated by the MAC counter. Actually a lot of people feel that way coming to the counter whether they are customers or applying to work there. The best way you can help feel more confident is to be prepared. If you read through this thread there are lots of great suggestions from those of us who work at MAC. Also I know there are several of us (myselff included who are more than happy to answer questions in private messages as well). I do want to answer your questions here though for you.

1) IIf you would like to speak with a manager at the MAC counter, then make sure you go in looking the part. Be dressed in professional and stylish all black attire. Make sure your hair is done, your nails are done, and you have beautiful make up on. As far as questions you should ask, I would ask her to be honest. Let him/her know you are interested in working for MAC and are looking for advice on what you can do to be a good potential make up artist.

2) Not having any retail cosmetics background or makeup experience, I might consider trying to gain some experience elsewhere before diving into MAC. Whether it is working for another brand or freelancing for other brands, this experience will help you feel more confident when you do join MAC.

3) Also you have some beautiful work in your post. I can definitely see your painting background in them. The one thing I did note was most of them are all dramatic theatrical pieces. They are great for the purpose they were intended (youtube competitions etc), but at the counter you will be doing a lot more beauty make up than anything else. THe current direction of MAC is focused on trends. So I would encourage you to start thumbing through magazines and seeing the make up trends you notice from runways, red carpet events, and celebrities. Ask your friends if you can use them as models and practice these trends. Its a completely different type of challenge, but will really help you long term become a strong make up artist. Some of my most amazing make over jobs have been transformations that are exceptionally subtle.

I hope that helps. If you would like to ask any questions to help you on your MAC journey, feel free to PM me. I am more than happy to help you any way I can.

Thanks for everyone's input on this topic. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person intimidated by MAC counter. Once I finish schooling to become a freelance makeup artist and get more experience I hope to apply for MAC.

Wow I think I started my process a little before you and I'm still waiting to come in and fill out my paperwork. It sure takes a long time.

Are they supposed to call you and tell you to come in to fill it out? The manager I spoke with told me to bring in 2 forms of id, and we could complete everything and send it in.

My process didn't take long at all until it came to the paperwork. Interview and demo went okay and were quick, got a freelance position and then the paperwork took a while to come (maybe a month and a half). Now it's been nearly two months and I haven't heard anything. A little bummed about that, but now I'm moving out of state =/. Sudden decision, but my timing sucks lol

Hey Ms. DaniCakes,

From what I understand, paperwork should be completed first, but, I guess that could vary by region. I am scheduled to go in and complete my paperwork on Friday. Hopefully they will call you and let you know something shortly... Keep us posted.

Heyy so I interviewed with homa two weeks who and she told me she wants me to come in for the demo and I still haven't heard back. I've emailed her but I didn't have her number is there any way you could message it to me? I spoke to the mac girls in pentagon and they said homa goes by the trainers schedule so maybe that's what the hold up is. but homa herself said to me I'm not sure when I'm going to call you but I am. hope that helped yo girl!! Shoot me a message, have you interviewed with her?

Hey all! I've read pages upon pages on this topic! I have to say... I wish I read all this before my first interview haha -___-

But, I still managed to peak the managers interests! I'll tell you what I've gone through so far. I submitted my application to Nordstroms for the cosmetics counters, and they got back to me within the week saying they were hiring, and would like me to come in for an interview. A woman named Sara was cosmetics department manager. She asked me a few questions on the phone, so I guess you could say it was a phone interview, but she was SO friendly, I felt like I was just chatting with a fellow makeup lover! :)

So I get to Nordstrom the next day for my interview, everything was going great! She was speaking to me as if I already had the job, talking about all the things "we" would do. It was awesome!!! Then she introduced me to the Mac counter, and I met the assistant manager and the manager, Danielle and Ed. We went to the E-bar to have to interview.. I was a bit nervous because I had to speak with BOTH of them, 2 on 1. They asked some tough questions, overall dealing with why I wanted to work for mac, if I knew any information on the history of mac, how I would deal with clients, how I would meet my goals, handle my coworkers, if I follow/keep up with trends, what my strong point is, how do I deal with working under pressure, what I saw myself doing in the long run, my favorite makeup artists, how I would compare myself to them on a scale. (I answered Pat McGrath, who is a GENIUS!! I love her! This made is difficult to compare myself) And there were plenty of other questions.. overall I felt nervous on the inside, but hopefully that didn't show too much. It didn't help that the sun was beaming in my face the entire time, from where I was sitting haha. My answers made them smile at each other at times, so I guess that's good! I also really emphasized that I'm always trying to learn as much as possible and put what I learn to use, they seemed to like that.

Anyway, they told me that they would call me back monday, and that I would probably come back Tuesday to do the demo. Told me to wear my best black, etc etc. I thought I handled it pretty well, considering my retail experience has been 6 months at Sephora. Makeup experience, I've been so passionate about cosmetics for as long as I can remember... since middle school really. I constantly teach myself about new trends and period makeup, I have so many books. I have experience doing makeup on different skin textures and tones, but not TONS. I hope this won't set me back in my demo, incase they decide to switch it up like I've read in these threads so far.

So... monday comes and goes, no call. Tuesday comes and goes, no call. Wednesday... I got a call!! They said that the person I need to see will most likely be around Friday, and that they will call me back either today or tomorrow with the rest of the details, and that they'll coach me as well. They said orientation is Tuesday, so they would like to get this all done by then. ( Sounds like they want me to work with them, MY GOD I HOPE!!!) I asked her if I needed to bring my brushes, and she said I need to bring "everything." I'm not really sure what that means, but if that's the case, I hope I'm working on my model, because I do not have the entire range of foundation colors from mac!! But anyway, here I am waiting for that phonecall with the details. I really want this job so much, I love everything about mac. They are the trend setters when it comes to makeup. This is my dream job, no joke!! To be able to do what you love while working... I would even do this for free as long as I got to make people feel happy and beautiful.

Sorry for the really long read, but I'll update you guys as soon as I find out more information. If any of you have any tips to really put me a step ahead and land me the job, please share!! :) Or if you guys want more info on the interview questions and how I answered them, let me know! Ttys

I GOT THE JOB!!!! Part time counter :) THANK YOU SPECKTRA FRIENDS, couldn't have done it without all of your advice. If anyone is interested in how the process went, please feel free to reply or pm me!

Hi guys! Has anyone ever interviewed with Becca Greene? I received an email from her to come to a Career Call and I just wondered what to expect. I have read this thread and I see that many people had multiple interviews. My email asked me to bring the model with me so I guess we will be doing demos on the same day. Is this the norm? Thanks!
