the 3rd keys basically act as sort of a suedo manager when the actual manager i not there they have the extra keys to the store/counter. our 3rd key really doesnt do much cause we all have access to the keys to get in the stock room.

I have my first interview on Saturday at 4:30 with the regional rep here in Chicago. I'm so excited!!!!! Any suggestions on what to wear? I know I should wear all black, but does it have to be conservative?

I usually recommend that you show up for your interview with a very polished professional look. It doesn't need to be conservative, but I wouldn't show up in a black strapless dress no matter how chic it is. It is still an interview so try to find a good balance between. But I wouldn't overthink it too much. I'm sure you will be just fine. Be confident and good luck!

Okay, maybe this isn't the best place to ask this question but I am new to makeup and I think I do an okay job. Recently, I decided to go to school for estethics because I do have a passion for makeup. I absolutely love it, I love how it can enhance your beauty, transform you into a new person, and more. My question is, how exactly do you get started working for MAC once you've completed school?

When you feel ready to work at MAC, all you need to do it stop in at a MAC location and ask for a location. I recommend attaching a resume to your application when you turn it in. My biggest advice is to not only develop your artistic skills, but try to find some opportunities to develop strong sales skills. The combination of both artistry and sales skills will really help make you an asset to any MAC team. Also know the products and the company, it will really help. Good luck. Feel free to ask any of us here. There is a good number of MAC artists here that are always willing to help others join the MAC family. I know specktra definitely helped me get hired at MAC, so take advantage of the advice found here.

After taking a break from getting into MAC and focusing more on studies, I've decided to have another go. I gave in my resume to the counter in Bloomingdales, spoke with the manager. She told me that corporate would be out of the office until after the new year, and that she'll forward my resume along to them.
She also mentioned that this month M.A.C is having a job fair, which I always seem to miss. She didn't specify dates, but I was planning on showering all the stores with my resume to greaten my chances of being called for an interview, is this right? I'm not sure if my one resume will only be considered for that one counter.

Hey! How did you know you passed the phone interview? I had one today, and she told me that she would get back to me to let me know if I would be going on to the next phase of the interview process. Did she tell you immediately that you would have a demo, or did she call you back after a certain period of time?

Hey guys!! This website is awesome! I currently work for a mkp line but my dream has always been to work for MAC!! I applied for a job w MAC about two months ago and finally got a call for an interview last week! I have been researching like crazy and I think everything on this website really helped me on the 1st interview! The recruiter who interviewed me was really friendly and asked me questions like:
my experience with makeup,
what i knew about mac,
what would i do to turn a bad situation into a good one?
How would I explain to a customer how to apply false lashes
how would i make wide set eyes appear closer
What color complements blue

she also asked me to rate myself 1-10 on things like:
matching foundation
applying lashes
my knowledge of color theory
how well i know my brushes

I was nervous but answered as best as I could, I also apologized for my nervousness, I told her I was just so excited because this was my dream job.. She said not to worry, that I was fine, that calmed me down.. So at the end of the interview she told me she would like to move me on to the second step which is the demo where I will bring a model and recreate a look.. She told me they will not just be looking at my technique in applying mkp but how well I interact with the customer and explain the products. She told me she will be calling me!!!! :)

I am sooooo excited and nervous at the same time!!! I have been reading as much as possible on specktra, any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a bunch guys! :)

getting started as a MAC makeup artist

Hello,

So here's the rundown:

I have began my journey as a MAC makeup artist. Today I had a semi interview with a manager at my local MAC store. Everything went great! The manager loved me and I think I gave a great first impression.I have a couple of friends who work for MAC and they gave me a couple suggestion on how to get started. They suggest I wear all black since that is there dress code and basically "look the part". So I wore a simple black dress with tights and boots. I did my hair and a simple day look. When I met the manger we hit it off right away. After her reviewing my resume and asking me a series of simple questions she advised me to go home study and research everything about the company and the different programs. She told me to give her a call in a couple weeks to see my progress and she will let me know the date of the upcoming job fair she will be holding in February or March.

So, now that I have gotten my foot in door, I am seeking for as much advice I can get about anything and everything such as :the hiring process, programs, company info, freelancing, etc.

If anyone can please give me some tips and suggestion I would really appreciate it.

=)

this is how mine happened...

i applied in the store. a month or two later the recruiter called me. we set up an interview. my first interview was with the recruiter, trainer, and someone else..it was a 3 on 1 and very intimidating.

the 2nd interview I did the demo with the trainer

the 3rd interview was with a store's manager, but since i didn't work out for that location, i had a

4th interview with a different store manager, who hired me on the spot for a perm position

All I can say is either be, or pretend to be, very goal oriented. Mac cares most about selling, hitting their goals, and selling as many products together as possible. Many times they'll ask you to "sell" a random object to them. It doesnt matter what the object is, you need to know how to sell it. This is mac's principle rule of selling:

F - features, pick one or two features of the product and quickly go over them
A - Advantage of that feature
B - benefit of the advantage
C - complementing item to go with it
E - emotional connection to that item

here's an example of using FABCE... pretend I need to sell a Spoon

(F) This spoon is great because it's made out of Lithium, (A) which is awesome because it's one of the most light-weight metals around. (B) It's important to have something light-weight so that your arm doesnt get tired. (C) We also have this Lithium fork that pairs nicely with it. (E) I tend to always eat my morning cereal with this spoon

That was an extremely silly example, but sometimes, they'll give you the most random items to sell, so your pitch will sound equally as silly, haha. I think one time they asked me to sell a pen, and another time they asked me to sell them one of their hand held mirrors that mac keeps around the store.

I also advice to not really wear color on your eyes. It makes it look like you've tried to hard. Keep it neutral, but clean and flawless. I'd also stay away from a red or other dark lip, because mac has a specific way of teaching to apply that, and they might look for errors.

Anyway, that's all the advice I can think of for now...good luck

LC,

Thanks you so much for you advice. This is great information I need to know. Thank you again for the information. If there's anything else you would like to share please do?

Every time I have been to a MAC counter I always keep the eyes simple and I make sure my foundation and blush is flawless. I also, where all black so it looks like I fit.

But thanks for the selling info I will definitely show them how goal orientated i can be =)

The hiring process can be a little bit long. I did my first interview with the manager of my counter where we talked a lot about mac history, product knowledge, sales knowledge, multi-tasking scenarios, and booking. I did a lot of scenario questions to see how I respond to different situations. After the interview, she asked me for some dates I'd be available to do my 2nd makeup interview. So I did a makeup demo the next week with our resident trainer. Besides the makeup demo, she also asked about my sales confidence, products knowledge, and verbage for sales. A few days later the manager called and hired me on part time. I'm full time now.

Some things I know my manager has said she looks for:
Image - Dressed professional but stylish in all black, the hair is styled, the makeup is polished and fresh. I agree with LC completely. Don't go for the colour or full out smoky eyes. A polished natural makeup application will earn you big points.
-Know about Viva Glam.
-Attitude, seeing how receptive to feedback the person is
