MAC - MAC Me Over Discussion

I have to agree with posts saying the evil eye quad is not that bad. I stopped by MAC yesterday to swatch a few things and ended up getting both quads, midnight blues, & 3 shadesticks. The evil eye quad shows up well & with decent pigmentation when layered over a paint pot. I used it over painterly today, along with prance & blanc type, and I really like the look. I agree that it is not an A+ palette or the best thing that MAC has ever released. I certainly wouldn't call it the worst though. I am NW 20, and I like that I can build up the color.
I may have to make another trip to my counter to look at Evil Eye. I really love colors like it. And I've had good experiences with other "hated" quads (like the WW Defiance quad, which I just wore the other day).

Of course, I am also NC20 and wear smoky eyes a lot as a day look, so I also like the idea of a "buildable" dark quad. I have lots of dark colors already, and if Evil Eye was super-pigmented, I probably wouldn't need it -- I have plenty of blackened colors.

Can anyone suggest a color similar to what stunner is in the pan? (any color sans sparkles. I have SO MUCH sparkly stuff I can't stand it lol)
I like the pan color but I have to REALLY dig into the blush to even get a smidgen of color- and I'm NC15/20

My favorite lip look is Secret Lover with Social Light on top.. I've already received quite a few compliments on the combo!

Here's the 226 I bought from a MAC store I'm waiting for one to arrive from Nordstrom's since I was paranoid that I wouldn't find it in the store.

I was initially planning on passing it up altogether without swatching. Then someone suggested that I try it over a paint pot, and voila the colors looked nice on my skin. Using a base (even a light color like painterly) really made a difference.

Because I am rather light, I need to be able to build it up. Otherwise I have an instant goth look, which looks great on others but not me. Others may hate this quad for this reason, but I rather like it so far. Plus I did not have to scratch the surface off or scrape the shadows to get a decent amount of color - like some bloggers have said. My standard eye brushes worked just fine. If I had to scrape it, then it would go right back.

So I waddled myself to Mac today against my better judgment and I am still on the fence about this one.

That lady grey quad is so pretty in theory but badly executed except for Hazy Day (which is pretty and swatched excellent). The horrors of the Evil Eye quad cannot remain unpunished. I hope they don't even sell at the CCO because that is how bad it is, even Moody swatched badly.

I compared Carbonized to Center stage and I must admit that Center stage has a tad more red in to me and Carbonized is more of a basic shimery brown so I must have it. I have buckwheat but it hard to get color out of it without work.
Rebel is awesome on every skintone and it's darker deeper berried sister Media is just as awesome. So right for fall, I can't even argue with them promoting this, it just works. Prince Noir is super goth but oh so pretty but done before like everyone says.

Now, here is why I pissed and bought nothing. I went in to see Mythical because I believe it is a dead on dupe for Falling Star, an old/old permanent color. So I asked a MA could I see it and she went around to the other MA, to see if they had it and nope. She came back and told me Mythical kept walking away from the counter and that was the third one they had put out that day and apparently they were getting stolen. It was 7:30 and they weren't going to put it back out again for the day, so I couldn't swatch it.

WTF!! not at the counter cuz I understand, but who steals makeup that people have stuck their hands in all day, with bacteria flying everywhere. So if you see anyone wearing Mythical and that girl has pink eye, you know who stole it, trifling people, I tell you.

I haven't been here in a while, did they do away with the swatch posts on all the different color collections or am I just blind?

I'm glad that the quads are getting much more love since people started to swatch for themselves. Go Evil Eye :)

Can anyone recommend a brush to use with the fluidlines for someone who is new to gel/liquid liner? I was thinking about the 263 as I don't want anything too thick! I'm so excited for Avenue :)

Perhaps you can check out the eyeliner brush that came out with the collection (211) or maybe the 210. I've been using the 231 with my gel liners. The new 211 has been getting pretty good reviews.

I would recommend a bent eyeliner brush. Both Sonia Kashuk and Smashbox make good ones. It's so much easier to get right at the base of the lashes.
Here's the Sonia Kashuk one at Target: http://www.target.com/p/Sonia-Kashuk-Bent-Eyeliner-Brush/-/A-11909196

Otherwise, if you want an angled bush, I think the MAC 208 is a very good one.

i tend to buy artist's brushes for eyeliner...like winsor&newton or something like that. they aren't cheap either, but they hold up well to frequent washing!

The first time I used Gel liners, I used a brush similar to the 212. It was so easy to just "push" the liner into my lashline. Making wings with that type of brush takes a steady hand. Since then, I've used the 263 for a few years now, and would recommend it to anyone! As it is synthetic, it drops the colour very nicely, and it is very thin, so you can do a small line, or build it up more thickly. It makes nice wings as well. I also like a bent liner brush from time to time. I have a cheapo one from crown that's okay. The only thing I find with the bent brush, is it drags my eyelids a bit, as they are a bit crepey. The line can end up a bit spotty, because my lid wrinkles up under the brush (ewww).

All in all, I'd pick up a 212 and 263, and see what works best for you! If you see a bent liner brush for cheap, grab that too, as so many people love them! Whatever you don't use for liner, you can use for brows, lips, cut crease looks, and so on.

HTH!

i really like the mac 209 brush. it isn't too thick but it's not so thin that you can't control it either :)
