What ever happened to seperation of church and state?

One nation, under God is what happened.

I think some of the churches are pressing their luck though, I have been reading too many instances where the priests have over stepped their bounds and have done things that might loose them their tax exempt status anyway.

The whole pledge of allegiance thing gives me the heebie geebies.

Separation of church and state went out the window a long long time ago but it'd be nice to have it back.

We also have to remember that ...with the whole pledge of alliegience, that is- how many years old? A lot of people didnt anticipate things being so liberal in this country as they are--- which I think is awesome that things ARE as liberal in this country as they are
smiles.gif
... I just think its hard to change something thats been around for so long and WAS widely accepted when it was created, you know what i mean?

When I was in high school, every day we had someone do the pledge over the loudspeaker in the morning. One of my friends was atheist, and when she did it she didn't say "under God.".. but she respectfully paused so that those who believed in God could say it. It was respectful and I think showed the tolerance that those who were "pissed" that she had refused to say "under God" should have been showing towards her. She got in no trouble for it, and I think was a great example for how tolerant we really should be towards others beliefs
smiles.gif
But man oh man, you should have SEEN how many people were PISSED that she didnt say it. Its not like she rushed through it.. she literally paused long enough fr everyone else to say it. No biggie.

When it was created, the "under God" part wasn't IN it, so there was no acceptance of it.

I'm pretty new here, but my feelings towards this whole prop 8 thing are not. Who wakes up in the morning and decides, "Hey, I think i want to be gay." Or vice versa. Being gay is not a choice. I've looked at it in that way of, I mean I guess you could choose if you want to live happily with someone of the same sex, or live miserably with someone of the opposite sex, it's a choice in that way, but you cannot choose the way you TRULY feel. I live in South Carolina. We still have the effin confederate flag hanging in front of our state house, so what's that tell you? I don't claim any particular religion. But I feel that if 2 gay people love each other, why deny them the rights that straight people have? Honestly, I know 2 gay men who have been together longer than most straight people I know. But do they get the rights that straight people get? No! It's not right, and it greatly saddens me to see that this is still so "controversial." It's not. It's love. It's a couple's right. Love isn't defined by sexual preferance. I thought love had no bounds. I can only hope that in my lifetime I see 2 men married, or 2 women married, legally, in every state in the US. We'll have a black president in just a few weeks, now let's get started on the same sex marriage thing asap!! Make it happen people, I don't have all day.

When was "under god" put in? I remember when i was in elementary school we used to say

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america, one nation for which it stands, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I havent heard the pledge of alligence in 12 years or something like that >.<

Edit: Oh wow it was put in in 1954, I guess my school said it differently

I was sad that prop 8 passed. It really pissed me off when I saw young kids 12-16 out in the streets at night holding signs "vote yes" and this guy with a sign saying that my community college votes yes on prop 8. Im like what! that is BS. I also didnt like how poeple put religion onto gay marriage. I dont think religion has to do with it. I asked one of my relatives if she would vote no or yes and she said yes because she said that just imagining two gay men together disgusts her. Others say yes because its what the bible says.

Its just upsetting that people think that way. Its not fair.

There's nothing I hate more than getting a child to advertise someones personal beliefs- especially something as serious as this.

I bet you some of those children who were holding up the "vote yes" signs, didnt even know what they were supporting

I bet some of them wouldn't want the GBLT community not to be married.

Sigh. This is how young discrimination is taught.

I hope they don't give up and keep fighting for the equality they deserve. I honestly cannot understand people that so viamently oppose gay marriage.

I am SO proud to live in a country that recognizes that the love between a same sex couple is just as valid, important and beautiful as the love between a tradition couple.

I really can't understand why people are so against gay marriage. It is not like someone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to marry someone of the same sex when you are heterosexual. No one is telling you that you have to be homosexual. It is a free country, if someone is homosexual then let them be! They have every right to marry someone they love.

I just think it's sad in this day and age that there is still so much hatred towards others. The government had no say in who I chose to marry so why should they have a say in who anyone wants to marry? As long as both people are above the age of consent (whether gay or not) I say go for it! They should have the same rights and protections that heterosexuals have...it's 2009 for goodness sake!!!!!!!

We allow gay marriage in Canada and I say hurray for that!! We also allow people from other countries who are gay to get married here. In other words there is no residency clause that says the couples must reside here.

I hope that society as a whole finally catches up with reality and realizes that they cannot stop it and that they shouldn't try. It makes me mad that people think they should have the right to judge others simply for who they chose to love...it's ridiculous.

Keep fighting the good fight and maybe one day the haters will come to their senses!!!

ok, for one, Civil Liberties should NEVER BE ON A BALLOT. That not only includes this gay marriage, but also those no smoking laws and things of that nature.

We are just going to have to wait until 2010 when its on the ballot again.

I am glad that they decided to uphold it, WHY? NOT Because I am against Gay marriage, but because If it was reversed, there would be no point in voting! Why vote if something can just be reversed anyways? no, we have to wait until the next ballot, thats how this kind of thing works.

I truly believe this prop passed due to Uninformed Voters. IF you are too stupid to read the pamphlet that came in the mail to EVERY registered Voter, to learn what the Prop was for and against, PLEASE don't vote. It was NOT that hard, YES was to Ban Gay Marriage and NO was approving Gay marriage, This was probably the SIMPLEST prop on the ballot , easily.

The next time this is on the ballot, the people who are rooting for gay marriage, need to UP their campaign courteously. If someone doesn't agree, STOP calling them names, That certainly isn't going to get you votes!! I don't know how many people around here stood outside grocery stores, Yelling at people who wouldn't sign their petitions. Look I'm not into talking to solicitors, you don't know my stance, don't call me a bigot bitch if I say " I'm sorry not today". The only thing that counts anyways is how I mark my ballot on Election day.

I just don't think it's fair to vote on this subject at all.

Why should the majority be able to decide what rights a minority should have?
That just doesn't sit well with me.

EXACTLY!!!!!

why should the majority be able to decide what ANYONE should be able to do with themselves at ALL??

with the exceptions of Murder, Rape (and the like) Theft etc. People shouldn't be able to tell ANYONE how to live their lives.

Hmmm yea...I don't know if it's just me, but I can't really seem to figure out WHY this is even an issue in this country. I'm sorry, but if you are against gay marriage there is NO way that it is for any other reason besides religion. So because you CHOSE to believe that something is wrong/sin/abomination/whatever, everyone should be governed by your belief system?

Personally, I think if you're not emotionally or physically harming someone or destroying their property you should be able to do WHATEVER the hell you want to do!! People who are against gay marriage can be against it all they want, but I don't think anyone should be allowed to deny another (adult) human being the right to do anything that is legal to the rest of the population. If you don't like it, don't worry about it. GET A FUCKING LIFE and stay out of other people's!!

Whew!
