China kills half a million cats in preparation for the olympics

Omg that's horrible.
I'm really not going to start because things like this enrage me. I'm still angry about the Japanese whaling and the way they treat Australian protesters. Without sounding racist, I'm highly against some Asian practices, but also the horrible things that happen in other countries throughout Asia and India.
Unfortunately animal cruelty is an international problem, some of the things people have down here have made me sick.

Animals need to be seen as equals not inferior to the human race, we need them to keep the earth functioning at optimum levels.

As much as I'd like to say this surprised me, I can't. The Chinese gov't has survived much worse bad press than this, but it doesn't make what they're doing any less disgusting.

In light of what's recently been going on in China, I'd be interested to see if any country boycotts the Olympics. It'd probably not be on the same scale as the one in 1980, but I don't think a lot of countries are going to turn a blind eye to the situation, especially after the coverage of Tibet's situation.

Quote:
At another, larger compound..., the sound of cats wailing could be clearly heard coming from a cluster of tin-roofed sheds, but workers denied they were holding any cats.
“There are no cats here, go away. ...,” a security guard said.

My first thought when reading this was "Baghdad Bob found a new job!"

If you're going to do these things, at least admit to it. They're going to get condemnation on the world stage anyway, what's the point of trying to hide it?

Wow China is doing something horribly inhumane? This really surprises me. I thought they had a great track record for these kinds of things. Surely it must be a misunderstanding, just like that thing with the Tibetans.

The Chinese gov't sucks. Given their track record with female human babies, I'm not surprised they'd do this to cats. I really am conflicted about whether or not I will watch the Olympics this summer and I am frickin' obsessed with the Olympics. I think a boycott like the 80s boycott is not going to happen simply because of all of the endorsement business involved now. It wasn't so big back then.

The IOC bears great responsibility in this as well. Whichever idiot over there thought that granting China the Olympics would do for the Chinese what it did for the Koreans has applesauce for brains.

Those poor cats.

I've been boycotting goods made in China [it's really hard, though] for years now. Their human rights record is atrocious; the invasion of Tibet inexcusable and after I saw pictures of street markets in which they sell cats and dogs to eat, it makes me sick. Jeez, and what about the pet food and lead in children's toys? Although I like many people I've known of Chinese descent, don't get me started about all the wrongs of that country.

I was hoping the US and other countries would boycott the Olympics in China but even if they do, the government on China makes it pretty clear they could care less about world opinion. It's also pretty appalling that the US government has allowed us to get into the trade imbalance with China. We'll come to regret this entanglement even more than we do now.

I think what they are doing in regards to Tibet is much worse...and has gained them such a bad rap. But still, that sucks, poor cats.

...speechless. it's so cruel. i would love to see them locked up in cages like that and see how they like it! just because animals can't speak our language CERTAINLY doesn't mean they don't have feelings too. it's just beyond sickening to me. honestly, stuff like this really tears at the heartstrings...

Not surprising but still so sad... It's amazing that the woman in the story has so many cats living with her.

I agree with everyone on this particular subject, but I also feel that media today are very bias in the way they report other news. Photos and news can be so easily manipulated by cropping or the way it's being said.
Like for the whole Tibetan thing, pictures are being shown around the world that "Chinese" police are beating the monks, when in fact it was Nepalese police in another country (scr: We Just Want the Truth! CNN:The world's leader of liars 西方媒体污蔑ä¸♥国报é“全纪录Anti-CNN.com,Anti-BBC.com,Anti-VOA.com) By no means I'm condoning their actions, but I just feel like there are always two sides to everything.

This is horrible.
Doesn't China idolize the cat? Isn't it a symbol of good luck?
A kitty statue is always found in a Chinese restaurant....

Greek Chick... I don't know about China, but I know that cats are a sign of good luck in Morocco, but despite them being highly revered, they're still kind of feral.

Fucking sick! I hope the bastards doing this rot in hell. I am now against the Olympics since they would allow such a horrible country to host. Anyone who dumps their pet and leaves them to die is a sick fool and deserves a the same fate that they subjected their pet to.
