This is nothing new for China,
the cat, dog, and small animal fur trade in China is huge.
Peta urges all of us to not buy any clothes with fur on them,
It could very well be someones cat or dog from China.

It's very sad, but it doesn't surprise me. The Chinese gov sees Olympics as the highest honor and approval. It's willing to do anything to make the Olympics go smoothly, and leave foreigners nice impressions. There are no veterinarians in China. People were raised in a culture that lacks respect for animal rights. Similar event happened when SARS was spreading throughout China. People thought their pets might be carrier of SARS, but it is actually the people who treated the animals so inhumanely and created such a deadly virus. So it doesn't surprise me what the Chinese gov is doing right now. It has done much more cruel things to animals and people. But I think it's mostly the government's paranoia's fault, not because of the Chinese people.

^^ That's a good point to make Beauty Mark! I have no beef with the people of China but their government makes my shudder. With that, I'm so glad to be a woman born in the West instead of the east. Life is hell for women in many many parts of the world.

This fucking upsets me so much that I'm not going to even censor myself and I couldn't bring myself to read the entire article. I don't know why people think that because we're bigger than animals means that we can do whatever we want without regard. There are better ways to control population. Catch them, fix them and release them back into their habitat. There's no reason for a mass kitty holocaust, as flowerhead put it.

I guess some of us aren't as evolved as we think we are...

These feral cats do an amazing job of keeping down the rodent population that eat crops and spread disease. What will they do when they are over run with rats, mice, mongoose, etc and leptospirosis (disease carried by rodents) runs rampant. I guess the plague will come back.....

There's a bit of difference between euthanizing cats in an attempt to clean up a city just for the Olympics by sanction of the government and euthanizing stray, homeless and/or possibly suffering animals through non-profit/animal rights/etc. organizations. Overbreeding is a problem, but it's not of a comparable nature here.

Not exactly the same, but take into consideration that using a population of 17M of Beijing and the 500K cats mentioned in the article, that's around 34 people for every 1 cat. Now look at NYC and its rat population- at last research, we're at 1 person for every 12 rats. And we're not mass-euthanizing them, last I checked. The issue here isn't euthanization, but rather the motive. It's aesthetic there rather than sanitation/overpopulation/etc.
