It's not a hate crime because she's white, and it's Halloween "art".

'Hanging Palin' causes Halloween display uproar

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — A Halloween display showing a figure resembling Republican vice presidential pick Sarah Palin hanging by a noose has caused uproar in the Californian city of West Hollywood, leading to condemnation Monday from the local mayor.

Chad Michael Morrisette has the effigy, wearing Palin's trademark red jacket, glasses, high heels and a wig, hanging from the roof of his house in the city to the west of Los Angeles.

"It should be seen as art and it should be seen within the month of October. It is Halloween. It's time to be scary. It's time to be spooky," he told local television channel KCAL9.

Mayor Jeffrey Prang issued a statement condemning the display, in which a disfigured model of presidential candidate John McCain can also be seen surrounded by flames.

"While these residents have the legal right to the display of Senator McCain and Governor Palin, I strong oppose political speech that references violence -- real or perceived," he said.

"I urge these residents to take down their display and find more constructive ways to express their opinion," he continued.

West Hollywood is one of the main gay areas of the United States. About 500,000 people are expected there Friday for one of the biggest Halloween carnivals in the country.

Halloween is rooted in pagan Celtic and Christian feasts and sees Americans decorate their homes with ghoulish displays of ghosts, witches and other monsters.

Had it been an Obama like mannequin, the guy would be in jail.
But it's okay.
She's female.
White.
And Republican.

Agreed it is as wrong as if it had been an effigy of Obama.
Hate is just wrong.

If you dislike Palin's views as much as I do be sure to VOTE!

As for any disparity in reaction, when was the last time a white woman had to drink from different water fountains than men or sit on a different part of the bus.
Yes, white women have faced and still face discrimination as women, but really it's not the same as the race hate African American's have had to deal with and still deal with, and just look at the white supremacist thread!

Exactly!!

Indeed this was a hate crime and the person should be punished because it was inappropriate.
But how often do you see these types of displays of white people being hung by a noose?
and Years ago..how often were white people actually being hung or discriminated against because of their race?

I wonder if you encourage people who agree with Palin's views to vote as vehemently as you encourage people who disagree with her views to vote.

Desegregation was a long time ago.
Racism still exists. So does gender bias, elitism, etc. It's just as racist to hate an Asian for being Asian, or a Caucasian for being Caucasian as anything else. Racism is racism is racism is racism is racism.
Women face discrimination every day based on their gender. Situations that happened literally decades ago do not mitigate the absolute lack of reaction (aside from humor) the display has elicited.

How many women were hanged or burned at the stake during the witch hunts?

I am certainly NOT diminishing the role racism plays in our lives today, be it pop culture, politically, or in the day to day goings on of our nation. I'm simply disgusted that because of who she is and the party she represents, it's okay.

I couldn't agree more. People don't see the racism on both sides! If I had an Obama mannequin in a noose outside of my house right now, I would be thrown in jail for defimation.

Regardless of who it is it is wrong, but, there seem to be different rules for certain things.

This election has shown probably some of the most ugly behaviors of this country. I don't like Palin or McCain's politics, but I sure as hell don't wish death or violence on them or wish to depict that.

I don't get why people wish to display such violence on anyone. Why can't grown people act civilized?

This is disgusting! This is a hate crime, and it doesn't matter who the target of the hate crime is. There are far more civilized ways to voice your opinion no matter what your political views are.

It's a stupid thing to do, but how is it a hate crime? If it was some irrelevant celebrity like Paris Hilton then no one would give a shit.

Not really none of the Obama effigy hangings have gone further than "investigation"

Sorry if it's free speech to do it to Obama then it's free speech to do it to Palin, both are horrible and reprehensible but this type of behaviour started with Obama effigies and law enforcement hands were tied, so if you want someone to face the long arm of the law for this, all those who did it before with Obama need to also

You're kinda tripping... get a hold of yourself...

Obama has been hanged in effigy and there have been no arrest. On several college campuses and peoples private property

I think the reason these things get so much attention with Obama is due to the FACT that he's getting numerous DEATH THREATS. So it's not just the symbolism of hanging it's that PLUS the actual threats. I'm not sure this is the case with Palin and I'm assuming that to be the reason it's not getting as much attention

Four Confess in Hanging of Obama Effigy - Political Machine
The AP, via AOL News, is reporting that four students have confessed to involvement in last week's hanging of an Obama effigy from a tree on a Christian campus:

NEWBERG, Ore. (Oct. 1) - A Christian university in Oregon said Tuesday it has punished four students who confessed to hanging a likeness of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama from a tree on campus.

George Fox University broke the news to students and staff Tuesday afternoon at an all-campus meeting. About 1,000 people attended, said Rob Felton, a university spokesman.
The report goes on to sat that the students have been punished, with "long-term suspension" and "public service", by the University. The FBI is investigating whether civil rightd were violated in the incident.

In my original story on this subject, I expressed a hope that this was the work of a lone individual. The fact that there were four students involved is sad, and may bespeak a deeper problem. Encouraging, though, is the swiftness with which they were caught and confessed. The school won't give any more details, citing privacy concerns, but it is fair to assume that the school received the cooperation of a student body that rejects this act, and everything that goes with it.

How could you face charges for defamation?
My law classes were a LONG time ago but that would be impossible it's the whole idea that the statement or implied meaning has to be thought to be the truth but is reality a lie to make it defamation.

If you really look at the situation for what it is.. that's not racism on either side.

Do you know the race of the person that had this thing on their lawn??? Were they white or black and did they have any other 'racially charged' imagery on their lawn

I think it's too bad that we can't even identify racism and it's 2008.

Dearest Shimmer, it's an election.
Are you a part of any non-partisan voter drive organizations? I mean what do you find so egregious about encouraging other democrats to vote. Believe me, NOW is sending email to WOMEN in this country encouraging them to vote if the disagree with Palins views especially surrounding the issue of CHOICE

Again, this is not an example of racism.

Meh, Shim, this isn't surprising. What causes an absolute batshit uproar from the far left when someone acts like this doesn't elicit a peep when someone targets someone on the far right. There is a distinct hypocrisy in some of the calls for tolerance from some people.

Nothing.
It just amuses me to see people encouraging others to vote, ONLY if the other person is in agreement with the original person's views.

Sorry.
Not liking me because I'm "that white bitch" IS racism. It's disliking and identifying an undesirable trait based on skin color (as well as personal distaste).

Those students were punished.
Palin has been called fairly vulgar names, had her family publicly skewered, had her email hacked into and posted across the internet, been threatened, etc. and it's been okay, with the exception of accessing her private emails.
Those students were punished, I have to say that again, because the person who's decided to post this piece of 'art' HASN'T been punished.

I don't think it's racist at all. I don't see any racial motivation behind it. I don't think it's about her being white. I think it's about who she is and what she stands for. It's ignorant, no doubt. It's offensive and in extremely poor taste but not racist.

Hate crimes aren't necessarily race crimes.

I think it's a stretch calling it racist, but it's definitely a double standard. The Obama effigy could have been argued that they hated his politics not his skin color but it wouldn't have amounted to anything.
