I don't know what to do. I applied to a craigslist posting on the 26th and got and interview with Ms. Homa. I got there early but when i got to the door no one answered. Took about 15 minutes to realize I could go around to the other entrance...duh...lol

So I met with her and she seemed nice. I was so nervous especially reading some of the posts on here, but I have wanted to work for MAC for so long, and I know that I can foster my natural talent even more working here. I know one mistake I made was that I did not have my resume. I know I know. But I went to go print it out and no ink. I had no money to go to a fedex/kinkos, and my drive to the appointment was gonna take 40-45 minutes. I had taken up all morning beating my face to MAC standards and putting together my polished, all black MAC outfit. I went for a brown smoky eye with a lil gold, fierce cat eye liner, and a neautral-y lip.

So she took down some notes. asked me why did I want to work for MAC, and I told her how I have been a long time user, wanted to work for MAC and be a Makeup artists. I told her about my retail and sales experience. she then asked me what my favorite MAC product was and I told her Spite LipGlass..which was my first ever MAC product or real makeup period! She asked me to sell it to her. I explained to her as best as I could, saying she can wear it straight from the tube, or apply some liner if she found it too harsh. She asked about my availability, and I told her open and we chatted a little about the new store opening. She told me she would contact me by the end of the week. She made no comment about my appearance or makeup, so I thought that was good. Another girl interviewing said that she had made some comments about her appearance, and how she could improve..so I dunno.

So immediately when I got home I emailed her a thank you letter, attaching my resume and some photos of work that I have done.

No reply at the end of last week. So I emailed her on Thursday and got a auto reply that she would be on vacay and would respond to emails by today. So I still haven't heard back from her yet today. Should I email her again or just wait? I don't even have a number for her to contact. :-(

What do you guys think?

ugh this entire summer has been so depressing... went on few interviews with Clinique, Mac, Laura mercier, and nothing. I never worked for a cosmetic company and i dont want to work for sephora because i dont want to waste time, i just want to work for a cosmetic counter and make people beautiful the entire day? for the past few months ive hit every makeup counter in nyc and i always get "you dont have enough retail experience, come back later when you do" its so frustrating and just makes me want to give up this stupid dream of mines.. ive seen worse people who don't even know how to apply makeup correctly working for mac, or clinique. Why is it so hard for me to find a job.. sorry guys for the sob stories..

Working at MAC >>> r/o

So, I was having fun around at the dentist today, and the assistant was telling me how her sister was a MUA. I was under the impression that you had to have some experience or skill level to start, especially, at MAC. But she told me that she had not attended beauty school, and learned everything AFTER they hired her.

So, basically my question is.. what kind of experience to do you have to have to work at MAC ? Any college at all?

Re: Working at MAC >>> r/o

You need to be 18. They focus on makeup skills, but more importantly sales. You don't need formal training but a good knowledge of their products, application skill and right attitude. If you can sell it to the interviewer there is a good chance you can get the job. Most start out as freelancers, on call employees, or limited hours until you prove yourself.

i feel like i should share my "how i got a job at mac" story.

i see all you guys stressing, and since i've been there and been SO stressed about it- and now i finally got a job, i feel like maybe it would help you guys out to know how i got it (and how long it took! lol)
Okay, SO. I realized makeup was what I wanted to do in highschool. I knew MAC was where I wanted to be- but I also knew that I wasn't just going to get it handed to me. I got a job working at Pac Sun, started shopping at MAC more- talking to the girls there... etc... Then after about two years (so I was about 19) I was hired at the Body Shop. They hired me as an assistant manager, and also had me in charge of their makeup section. Now, really- NOBODY bought makeup at TBS. Not my store anyway... But having this on a resume is what got me my next job- Bare Escentuals. I worked there for about a year and a half, got a ton of retail cosmetic experience... Then had to do the whole "work in a boring office thing", because the economy began going down the shitter- and I needed a full time job with benefits (which Bare Escentuals SUCKS for. they rarely promote from within).... So... Now, five years later (yes seriously) I get a call about a resume that I dropped off on New Years Day, '09. My first interview was in May- and I am just getting started next week.

So seriously guys, DON'T GIVE UP. If MAC is really who you want to work for- then WORK FOR IT. You may not get it right away, I interviewed at least 3 or 4 times. All of my interviews went really really well too, I had a trainer tell me he loved me. It's just a really hard company to get into. Once you do get in it though it'll be worth it.

So the moral of my really long story is, if you interview and don't get it... Then build up your darn resume! I think MAC is a company that really likes their employees to earn their positions... Don't feel like you're above working at a different brand. I know a lot of them aren't as good as MAC, but without working at Bare Escentuals, I NEVER would have learned what I needed to learn about selling makeup to get the job at MAC.

Good luck... Sorry this was so long, and maybe cheesy. I just wanted to share =)

wow both of you have pretty inspiring stories i tried with mac right out of high school because i knew that this was something i always wanted to do i didn't even get a call back, then i applied last year in between going to beauty school, had an interview it didn't go well at all
ssad.gif
, bad nerves. i applied with macy's to be a sales associate i had an interview with two of the manageres it went really well, but the head manager over macy's said she rather put me in the cosmetics department, because she could tell that's what i was most interested in from the interview so she set me up with an interview with director of the cosmetics department i was there 5 min. early for my interview( so don't like to be late) and i told them who i was and who i was there to see, well when i get there she acts like first of all i inconvienced her
angry.gif
she was pretty rude and had bit of bad attitude, but i still just tried to conduct my self professionally, first off she asks me what brought me there other than to see her so i'm thinking huh, so i told her nothing i'm here for an interview only ( guess that was the wrong answer
th_dunno.gif
) so from there she asks me tell her about my self and i tell her i about my cosmetic and retail experience (which i gained in beauty school for two years, again wrong answer), so then after that she cuts me off and goes on to say that i should've told her how i do makeup for friends and families and i wasn't selling my self
th_dunno.gif
ok, so then she goes on to say how she needs to be sure i can make it past the counter managers if she hires, so i'm still like ok, but then she says how she likes to keep a batch of candidates to chose from( which i can understand as well) but then she tells me first off i look like a "mac girl" ( i'm flattered
blush-anim-cl.gif
thank you, nicest thing she said the whole time ) and that she likes the way i presented my self so we exchange numbers because she told me she wanted to do a follow up interview so i'm just thinking ok, cool. she told me if i didn't hear from her call her so i did, left her messages and this was a month ago or more still haven't heard back from her so i still went ahead and turned in my app. at mac last week or so and well i'm still waiting to hear from someone but until then i'm still going to apply where i can. sorry for going on and on.

MAC Interview HELLPP!!!

Hi guys! So...my dream is to work for MAC and I finally got up enough courage to apply. I did this I believe 3 weeks ago. So finally I got a call the 7th to come in for an interview and a demo. Mind you it's for their freelance team, but I DO NOT care about that I'm just psyched to have an interview for MAC!!!

Now that the interview is tomorrow I am totally freaking out! I'm nervous as all hell and I dont even think I have a model yet! And also I'm afraid of all the things I'm gonna have to do with the demo. Like sanitation wise. In esthetics school we were super sanitary but I dont know if theres a different way MAC does it.

ALSO I wanted to dress trendy but professional for the interview and I bought this dress...what do you guys think?

I'd be wearing something ontop of it so its not a tank top...but I dont know what, or what shoes. I am just a nervous mess! Any help with be greatly appreciated. I just dont know what to do!!

first of all Good luck on the interview. The dress is cute, but I wouldn't worry too much on that. Worry more about the DEMO. The girls who went through the interview process pretty much described it in detail on what they went through so just go through the forum and see if any of their experiences will help you get through your interview.
Let us know how it goes, and dont be nervous, be yourself and pretend you aren't being judge when doing the demo.

Re: MAC Interview HELLPP!!!

Don't worry about sanitation. They will review that with you before you begin your demo. And if you mess up with sanitation, they will understand. Just be engaging and interactive with your "client" and of course do your best on the make up. Also be open to feedback. MAC is HUGE on feedback.
