Typically expect to be working a long shift on Saturdays. I know I was usually working 12-7 every Saturday. But sometimes I would be earlier or later depending on when everyone else was working. Most of the staff would be working a 7 hour shift with staggered start times. My store was located in a very high volume mall so the traffic our store got was insane. Most Saturdays you were wriggling through bodies just to get anywhere. So it is possible that some locations are less intense and be more flexible.
My best advice to familiarize yourself with product would be to ask your co-workers during downtime. When you are not helping customers there is usually side jobs to be done, so while you are working on those, ask them to help you with learning foundations etc. They can also give tips for brushes to go with products etc. My store was very interactive with each other. We were constantly sharing ideas and knowledge to help each other out. Ask your manager for any resources she might have to help you learn products. MAC is huge on feedback, so if you show initiative they will notice that. Lastly, do you know when you will be going to BASIC? Basic will also help with learning products without the pressure of the sales floor. (plus it was one of the best experiences I've had in my makeup industry life)
Best of luck to you! If you have other questions feel free to ask.

Also, I forgot to ask:
When you work every Saturday..is that the whole day or just x amount of hours AM/PM? And what exactly are the hours? (Dumb question I'm sure)
And if I'm only familiar with one of the foundations and none of the others or any of the brushes for that matter (Yes..I'm that new..) Would they be opposed with me using their makeup "face" paper and testing the brushes and foundation to familiarize myself with their products during my work hours? Or should I do that on my own time at the counter?
Thanks for all the help!
