I am so surprised by the stuff that has sold out already (other than ML) because there are other items that seem to be MUCH more popular here. I ever would have predicted that S&S would be the first e/s to sell out.

It's just out of control now. The reason for this is due to not only hysteria, but low quantities of product being sent to stores. It's as if Mac wants this to happen. I think we deserve better than that.
On a happier note, I wore Marine Life again today and I am sooo in love with it. Looking in the mirror, taking pics, my chubby little cheeks have such a merry glow. This is the second time I've worn it and I also swatched it several times and I'm still not done with the gold shimmer. I am looking forward to getting beyond it though b/c I know it'll still be just as pigmented and gorgeous. So glad I bought 2!

You both raise some interesting points here-- what I think happened is, last year when the recession was so bad, MAC had manufactured such a surplus of product that they were losing out. I recall a couple MAC stores closing, employees' hours being cut, a hiring freeze, even- and I believe it was because they had made all this product but had no idea how to get rid of it. I mean there were companies that were definitely affected more than MAC, but I think they still felt a pinch. So, now they have slowed down on production to accommodate the recession, but, it seems that there's been more spending happening as of late- I believe I read that consumer spending is on the rise- so they just weren't prepared for the influx of sales. I think it must be hard as a company to predict how much product to make, because the economy is very unpredictable. And who would've guessed this silly sea horse powder would invoke that much hype? When I first saw it I thought it was so gimmicky and lame. But add that to the fact that MAC produces this stuff months before the release, so before the hype really hits, they only have so much product. They can probably make more, but it does take time to get the order in, produce the powder, then ship it to the distribution centers, that then ship it to the stores/customers. I honestly don't believe MAC would purposely make less product if they could help it, just for hype. I mean, if you have people that will buy it, why not sell it to them? In the end, MAC is losing out because they couldn't make a $25 sale to 1000s of people because they don't have a product.
I agree that the hype is CRAZY, I have not seen this kind of hype in my 5 years of collecting. Even Ripe Peach I felt was kind of a delayed thing- it took a couple days at least for it to sell out.
