LOS ANGELES (May 15) - A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Missouri woman for her alleged role in perpetrating a hoax on the online social network MySpace against a 13-year-old neighbor girl who then committed suicide.

Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl.

Drew allegedly helped create a MySpace account on false premises to contact Megan Meier, who thought she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans, who turned out not to exist.

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

Drew has denied creating the account or sending messages to Megan.

MySpace is based in Beverly Hills. The indictment noted that MySpace computer servers are located in Los Angeles County.

Due to juvenile privacy rules, the U.S. attorney's office said, the indictment refers to the girl as M.T.M.

Each count in the indictment carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Last month, an employee of Drew, 19-year-old Ashley Grills, told ABC's "Good Morning America" she created the false MySpace profile but Drew wrote some of the messages to Megan.

Grills also claimed Drew suggested talking to Megan via the Internet to find out what Megan was saying about Drew's daughter, who was a former friend of Megan's.

Grills said she wrote the message to Megan about the world being a better place without her, which was supposed to end the online relationship with "Josh" because Grills felt the joke had gone too far.

"I was trying to get her angry so she would leave him alone and I could get rid of the whole MySpace," Grills told the morning show.

Megan's death was investigated by Missouri authorities, but no state charges were filed.

i heard that this morning - i was a bit confused about what she has been charged with (until i read the above), but i am glad that she has been charged with something.

hopefully the charges stick. what horrible behaviour for an adult and a mother.

Me, too. It's a shame she can't be charged with anything more serious. I hope she gets prison time and becomes someone's bitch.

I am absolutely sickened by this woman's appalling behavior. I am glad that (some) justice is being served here, although it will never bring back that poor girl.
As a child and into my early teens, I too was overweight and suffer from depression. I was bullied and tormented throughout middle school. It even got to the point where boys would ask me out then laugh in my face and tell me "why would I want to go out with someone as fat and ugly as you." I actually had thoughts of suicide on several occassions. To this day, years later (I am 28), I still suffer from insecurity and low self-esteem because of these experiences. So, I can completely relate to what this little girl was going through.
I just cannot fathom why an adult would behave in this manner- especially knowing that this child had a history of depression. What a heartless b*tch. I do not think there is any amount of punishment suitable for this woman. And I feel terrible for this girl's family. Her mother was vigilant in supervising her computer usage and everything. This is such a heartbreaking story.

Thank goodness she is charged... I find the 19 year old's comments disturbing. Telling someone that the world would be a better place without you is really heartless and sounds like you wish the person were dead... There are so many other blunt, pretty mean things you can tell a person taht you wish to have no contact with them without implying death

The verdict is in. I'm appalled by the defense lawyer's comment about no one reading the TOS. I guess I'm not held accountable for any contract that I don't read, huh?

Besides the part where a lot of people allegedly don't read TOS agreements before checking off the box, why is it so awful that we're being held accountable for legal agreements?

and it's situtions like this, that I can honestly say I would not be upset by hearing that afterwards there was some form of "vigilante justice".
