Jean Paul-Gaultier caught on pretty quick on this and launched his man makeup line (it bugs me because all products have notes of Le Male perfume on them) and so now it's OK for guys to shop for makeup.

On the other hand, whenever I'm buying eyeliner, I'll go throught the:

SA - "Would you like me to gift wrap this for you?"
Me - No thank you, it's for me. (followed by an nervous look from the SA because she thinks she made a faux-pas)

It's kind of odd to go through this, specially whenever I'm at a new store or there is a new SA helping me, I'm one of those "Hi, how are you doing, could you please get me (insert product of the day) please? Why thank you, have a nice day" customers so I don't relate to any of the situations here. But some places aren't friendly at all for guys to shop for makeup, yesterday I was looking at the Dior counter, I was wearing a friggin' suit and the security officer was standing next to me, just staring, at a point I turned to him and said "Have you worn Dior's loose powder, what do you think of it?" and he immediately disappeared.

I love helping out guys who want to buy makeup. But you are right, most guys get looked at as if they had three heads...

What a fucking bitch! It really is a shame because they have nice sales and such. I'm actually planning to go today to buy some lipliners. I hate how this seems to be a popular thing with Ulta. I'm moving to San Diego this weekend and I'm not excited that I'll be receiving this kind of service in the future...

LOL. That reminds me. I was on the phone with my best friend and she said she was going to stop by Ulta to buy a Maybelline eyeliner (so 6-8 dollars or something?). She didn't have any money so she brought in ALL COINS. LOL. I was totally predicting that the Ulta bitches would give her dirty looks considering their "normal service" and think that she's poor or something. I called her back after she was done and asked how it went. I asked if the cashier was being rude to her or giving her rude looks and she said she didn't know because she was too busy looking down and counting her money. hahaha. But I just totally loved what she did!

Busy hours: most of the day Friday (esp evening), all day Saturday and Sunday.

Slow hours: the rest of the week

We use counter brushes on the customers. I freelance and have never had to take my own set in, since the counters always have plenty.

id be like "uhm well maybe you shouldnt put sale signs up BEFORE the sale then, because thats false advertising". she could have done a simple price over ride and that woulda been that. no sweat off her back. but now she lost what would have been a good customer because she has a bad attitude.

i'd just like to say that i work in a drug store, and we do weekly sales, which go from sunday through saturday.
we take the signs off on saturday afternoon and after that we start putting up the new sale signs. we do this because on sunday when everyone comes to get the sale items before the sell out and have to wait for the next shipment, they get angry if the signs arent already up (and they show up before we open sometimes. were JUST a drug store, people. you can get a coffee maker somewhere else). so thats WHY we put them up early. BUT! if someone wants to purchase an item after we've put up the sign on saturday afternoon but doesnt really start until sunday, we just have the manager do a price modify on the register, and its never been argued becuase its what we SHOULD do, so i totally agree with that point. i was just saying this becuase i have had people get flustered when we put up the sale signs a day before, and i wanted to give you some insight on why we do

oh dont get me wrong i totally understand! we do brand new floorsets at my store every other thursday because TBS does new promotions every other week or so. to avoid the whole problem, yes thursday during the day we start setting up the new tables, but keep the signs in the back and then promptly put them up the second we close thursday night, so when the sale starts friday morning everything is set.

youre right it IS the right thing to do to just price modify and honor the customer. i just had a recent price raise across the store and someone had found a body butter with a 17.50 label on it and we honored it (even though we knew she dug through the whole wall to find the ONE we missed)

BUT there is the rare occasion where there is nothing i can do about anything, like last week when a woman came in really avid about getting her GWP makeup bag and goodies because she swore she saw it on the website (which it wasnt, she was just assuming it was soon since its that time of year...). meanwhile the company hadnt even shipped us the GWPs (which they do a week or two prior to the event) and there really was nothing i could do if that promotion wasnt set to start for 2 to 3 weeks (nationwide, globally) from her rant and her insisting that if she spent 29.50 today that when she came back in 2 weeks that we grandfather clause her into her right to a GWP. which is kind of assenine because if we did that, then every returning customer would flock in with receipts and be entitled for tons of bags. but this was 3 weeks before an event even started, before any of us had even seen a GWP bag.

speaking of assenine, can we talk about how yesterday this girl comes to return 50 bucks of Tea tree and Aloe skin care products (clay masks, 2 foaming face wash, toner), because it "just didnt work for her". i asked her how long she had tried the products because they just dont work overnight, and she replied "ive used them for a month and it made my pimples go away but see now i have one and i think its ridiculous *points to nonexistant spot on nose*". okay so it worked really well for you, but because its that time of month and you got one pimple, its time to get your money back for the empty cases? THE ALOE FACE WASH WAS DOWN TO ITS LAST 5 pumps, THE TONER WAS 60% GONE AND THE TEA TREE CLAY MASK WAS EMPTY! DO YOU ORDER A BURGER OR A STEAK AND EAT EVERYTHING BUT ONE BITE THEN RETURN IT AND SAY IT WAS BAD? even if you didnt even touch the 2nd bottle of face wash, we still have to chuck it. that made me really annoyed that someone would do that.

Well, now I know why the MUA's at the counter I go to love me. I even get samples of products and they whisper stuff like "Your such a good customer" or "Thank you for being so patient, here try some of this" lol.

Only one time I got pissed with a MUA (at a counter in a department store in Willowbrook Mall ) My sister was making a gift basket for one of her friends as a birthday present and her friend loved MAC so she was going to hook her up. Now, to fill you in, my sister is 22 years old but looks 15 or 16 and is softspoken. She's always getting carded lol. Anyway, she asked one MUA for help and this chick looks her up and down and says "sorry little girl I don't have time to make up your face". I was standing off to the side and I started to say something when my sister snapped & was like "who the f--k are you calling a little girl"?
Aparently there was a manager there who came over and calmed her down and asked this other lady to help us. Between the two of us we spent about $250. I don't think she was mad about the lady thinking she was a teenager, but the up and down once over and then to be brushed off like that... but that's the only bad experience I or my sister have had with any of you lovely MUA

I work in a mildly-popular European clothing store and half the customers I work with are awfully rude. I got called a bitch the other day because an empty bag I handed back to a woman floated and she thought I threw it (I hadn't even spoken a word to her either, and I didn't serve her, my coworker did). Customers try to get our attention by marching up to the registers and shouting "HELLLLOOOOO?" if nobody appears in 0.2 seconds. We also deal with a lot of thieves so we put up with verbal abuse every now and then. For example, I was called "racist" three months ago because I was tailing some thieves around my store on a busy Sunday afternoon. I didn't see them steal anything because they do the diversion trick, but we called security on them and after they left I told security what they all looked like. Then one of them threw something back into the store right in front of a security guard and then they all marched back into my store calling me racist because I told my manager to call security on them. I quote: "That girl, she's racist!" and "It's all them white people who steal, not us." (For the record, I'm white and they were black). I wanted to be like, "Yeah, and you just think I'm racist because I'm not black." My store manager is black and I work with a few other people of different backgrounds and ethnicities, so damn, if I'm working for a black woman you can bet I'm NOT racist. We've also been instructed to actively watch anyone engaging in suspicious activity regardless of skin color...it just so happens that this time the people were black. And, a few days ago we followed around a bunch of rich white teenagers, so yeah, it's not "just" black people who steal--it's everyone!

and really, once I get personally attacked or called malicious names, it becomes a personal insult and yes I will call security on your ass! The people calling me racist were all "Don't make retail your life sweetie, I work two jobs and go to school!" to which I replied, "If you work two jobs why are you stealing?! I go to college full-time, thank you." and then they got all nasty with me and security escorted them out. They demanded MY name and my manager's name and said they were going to call customer service on us but they never did...we called the head of our store's security on them and let him know how malicious these people were. Any time a 'customer' gets verbally abusive with any of our employees we call CS and Security before they can to give them a heads-up on the situation.

Luckily the mall I work at also has a zero-tolerance policy for disorderly conduct and verbal abuse, which basically means any store can call mall security the moment a customer does something or says anything that can be considered abusive or violent. So, the next time someone calls me a bitch or starts insulting me/threatening me/etc. all I have to do is speed-dial security and the offending 'customer' will be escorted out of the store.

Working in CS for 5 years I can tell you that the best way to combat really rude people is to act like their attitude didn't get to you. The lady I referred to above who shouted "HELLOOOOOO" was so embarrassed and ashamed when I came to ring her out and said "Excuse me, are you all set?" She acted like, "Oh, crap, I just made a fool out of myself."

And I always love to refer the Livejournal.com community "customers_suck."

i do not work in makeup, but i am the receptionist in a nail salon and there is this bitch customer who is always so rude to me and everyone else in the shop. she actually smiled today whilst getting her nails done so i assumed she was in a good mood.....then, i was at the register ringing someone up when she just waltzed herself over to MY appointment book and started flipping through it like she owned it. seriously, how rude? she then proceeded to write herself an appointment down....

then, tina, my boss walked over to her and told her she could help make an appointment for her. she wrote her name and what she was getting done down and then asked for her number. and the bitch woman said 'i cannot even count how many times ihave given my number to you people' i just wanted to tell her, 'oh theresa, because of my photographic memory, of course i have your number memorised along with our eighty-four thousand other customer.' apparently it is now part of my job to be a human phone book......

LOL! That's exactly what my dad use to do. I'm not sure if he still does that, I'm sure if he could he would at any chance he could get.

I work at a Gift shop in Toronto and I get a lot of people that don't say anything back, give me dirty looks, or "No thanks, just looking" when I greet them at the door. I usually avoid them because I really don't give a damn. I always treat customers the way I'd like to be treated. I pretty much only ask them if they need help only ONCE (if they look dazed or confused or rummaging through a pile of things).

Just yesterday a lady accused me of stealing a camera that she thought she forgot in the store. I distinctly remembered her not leaving anything behind, but her mind was so set on the fact that she forgot it there and that I was lying to her, she asked me for my name and address to file a complaint. I happily gave it to her because I know I didn't do anything wrong and honestly, I'm not scared of her. I immediately wrote a note to my managers notifying them of what happened and how angry I was (just in case the lady got her polluted story to them before I did). When I went to work this afternoon I was surprised at the fact that my managers thanked me for the note, how much they agreed with me, and they didn't even question me further about it. Most of the time I work with them and they know that I'm honest and treat customers very well. One of them plainly pointed at my note and said "What a stupid lady"!! They're the best managers I've ever had, they really made my day and because of them I don't feel so angry anymore.

i dont work in the makeup industry but i do tech support over the phone for time warner cable & i can definately agree with so many things people are saying here...people are even more rude over the phone, its pretty bad..

people call b/c they want my help, they don't know what to do to fix their problem, i attempt to help them & they start screaming & swearing at me if things arent going as quickly as they want it to...i hate it the most when male customers get pissed at me because THEY are clueless & cant follow my simple instructions or cant answer simple questions...and ask to speak with "the technician guy" PLEASE! they just can't handle that a girl knows more about their HD tv/wireless internet then they do!

i work at Ulta and i try to greet and help every guest that comes in, ive heard alot of stories from just people i meet saying that they don't like the girls at Ulta because they act snotty and what not. i completely agree i go to other stores and i cannot believe the crap that they do. but its not just the employees.. the customers have atrocious attitudes as well. at my store its close to like a retirement community so i get the pissy decrepit old ladys who r soo rude n think i she kiss their osteoperosis ridden ass because they want a miracle cream that will get rid of their wrinkles in one night and if it doesnt work its my fault. or if a perfume smells bad i made it that way. or the ever great one who goes behind the register looking for samples and coupons?!?!! i mean wtf.

sorry its late im tired and im pretty sure i dont make sense right now..

So you try to split the difference and get the quiet woman something subtle, the whole time being told that brushes and primer are a scam made up by cosmetics companies to get more money, that you don't line the lips properly, that you didn't quite shade that eye properly, that you don't know how to pick colors for her skin tone/put foundation on her skin type/put makeup on a woman in her profession/don't know what you're talking about re: skincare because Lye soap and Olive Oil have always suited her just fine thank you very much/place your own illogical insult here. Of course, the only "good" thing is at the end they usually spend $15 or $20 while bitching at you about the cost, which you pretend to ignore while you cheerfully hand them the receipt and thank them for their time, knowing full-well that as soon as they are 2 steps away (still within ear-shot) you will hear "Honey, she didn't know nothin'. I dont work as an MA or anything like that, but I work as a receptionist at my school and well....when registration comes around everyone just starts screaming and yelling at me cuz somehow they figured it was my fault they came to late to sing up for an appointment. Its like...well....I didnt wait 5 seconds before your registration time to come see the advisor! SSShhh.....

Anyways, I love my MA's! At all the counters so I always try to be nice and understanding, except for the ones that are super rude!! I met this MAC MA once at a MAC store and I was going to buy about $150 dollars worth of stuff that another MA had helped me pick out. I totally forgot to ask for something and this MA totally ignored me even though I kept asking her for help and standing right infront of her. She wasen't even doing anything. I got so mad! I asked to speak to the person in charge and she said she was going to punish the MA, I said no that it was fine and that I understood she might be having a bad day so in return they gave me a free shadow and lippie!
