Hey...quick question (sorry if it's already been answered, although I did sift through most pages to find it)

Does anyone have a basic outline of what the Phone interview questions are?

My experience trying to get a job at MAC ... I need input!

ALRIGHT SOOOOOOO being a lurker for almost 3 years and a member for over 2 years, i'm not even sure if i've ever made a post but i'm gonna take a dive right now and not only say HELLO FELLOW SPECKTRITES
greengrin.gif
but tell you a little bit of whats going on in my end.

I'm an art student aaaand i've been freelancing consistently for almost 3 years now.

I decided to apply to MAC. I was asked to apply over the Holidays but then I found that all the counters were full and finally I found out like 3 weeks ago that they had a position available for freelance so i hopped in
smiles.gif

counter 1.... went in, asked for the manager, met her, said hi, introduced myself, asked if she was busy and she said not at all, so i asked her if she had a minute to look at my portfolio (has all professional images from photoshoots and 1 runway show i collaborated in) and then she goes "well, i'm busy with a customer right now so you can show the girl at the front"... i got pretty irritated but oh well, filled out my app, turned it in with a cover letter and a resume and references and even a recommendation letter

counter 2.... i went yesterday and (of coursed) dressed super cute and made sure i had my makeup 100% on point (by on point i meant how you're supossed to wear it to work - full face, 3 lip products and 3 eyeshadows, etc, great clean brows, and just flawless all around)
The girl was SO EXCITED to see me applying
smiles.gif
she introduced herself to me and said she loved my outfit and asked me if i was looking to apply there which i of course happened to be! and she said "come back tomorrow, my store manager will be here after 2 pm, and make sure to bring your portfolio with images where the makeup can be CLEARLY seen and be ready for an interview or maybe even a demo with a random customer"

so me being me, i get all excited
th_DANCE.gif
ii staid up till like 4 am getting my photos glued to a new book, and i woke up at like 9 am today, went to the gym, showered, did a skin treatment, let my face rest, spent ONE HOUR doing my makeup!!!!! I can do it in 10-15 minutes but i wanted it to look PERFECT and i kept going outside to make sure it looked great in natural and inside light, and made sure to use ALL MAC and know what i used, lashes, all new clothes...
I show up the next day around 3 and the girl at the counter was standing behind the register with her elbows resting and her fists on her chin. i was like "whats up?" and we chatted for a bit, then i asked her for a manager and she goes "well.... (very slowly) our managers are gonna be gone for like....... 2 weeks!" and i was like "really? cause the girl yesterday told me they would be here today!" and she told me they were on vacation or whatever. AND THAT THEY HAD HIRED SOMEONE TODAY! so i said thanks and just left.... with my huge portfolio, cover letter, resume, recommendation letters and whatever else and drove all the way back hiome.... i was so upset!

when i got home i explained what happened to my dad and he was just as shocked as me, because the impression we got from the girl the day before was that i was going to have an interview (at least a casual conversation with a mgr to set one up) and then we found out there isnt even a manager for 2 weeks -- is that even allowed?? SO my dad goes behind my back and calls the store and asks for a manager, and the girl on the phone told him she would be there the next day at 9 am. WTF!

So at this point i am SO UPSET because i KNOW my makeup and my stuff was all on point and i dont understand why 1 of these 2 girls lied to me.... so i called counter #1 and after greeting the person on the phone and introducing myself, i asked her on the status of my resume. she said that she had actually read mine (its been like a week since i turned it in) and she brought it out and we talked for a little and basically did all she could, which was put it at the top of the pile for her "freelance artist recruiter" and told me the lady was based off a freestanding store in dallas and told me her name (i actually had emailed this lady my resume a few weeks ago) and she told me it was a pleasure to talk and if i needed anything just call back and that she would put in a good word for me or whatever....

WHAT IS GOING ON?? the girl at counter #1 said they are probably just concerned about competition at counter #2 or whatever but i don't understand why they would be unnecessarily catty (i mean i guess i don't think the same way)
i mean i'm trying to get a job, not be miss popular....

any ideas??

i really want this job.

Re: My experience trying to get a job at MAC ... I need input!

Hey...I don't think you need to worry too much about it. This is probably what happened at counter 2 when you asked if the mgr was busy and she said no...

I was trained this way at MAC but Im sure any retail place would have the same policy...you never tell a customer that you're too busy for them. That would be terrible customer service. Instead, you listen to what theyre asking, and if you are busy but can answer their question quickly, you do it. If not, you listen to what theyre asking, then refer them to a more available employee. The manager probably had no idea she was in for a 5+ minute conversation, and I'm sure she wasnt trying to be rude.

As far as your dad calling there to see when the manager was coming in...You always give the customer some light at the end of the tunnel as far as when the manager will be in. If someone is having an issue and needs to speak with the manager, theyre going to be upset to know they have to wait two weeks. Instead what might happen is, the next morning at 9am if your dad was to call again and ask for the manager, they might put the 3rd key on the phone. This person holds a key to the store as basically acts as a manager if the real manager or asst manager isnt in.

MAC is an amazing place to work, and as a result the turnover rate is very very low, so spots are hard to come by. You did everything you could to snag that position, so don't beat yourself up over it. I know I personally didn't even have a portfolio when I got hired there, so you're a step ahead of most people.

Just keep making an appearance at both counters and expressing your interest in working there. I haven't worked there in 2.5 years now but now i'd like to go back, so everytime I'm at my mac store I always ask about whether or not positions have opened up. keep your head up

Ok so i was talking with my regular MA on facebook, and i told him i was really interested in working for MAC. then he told me that there was opening and gave me the email add of the contact person to contact. So i immediately emailed the retail manager of my country for M.A.C to apply for the position and i immediately got a response from her telling to go down for a 1 to 1 interview the next day. Anyway, i passed the 1 to 1 interview and my make up demo is scheduled for this coming monday 5 April at 4pm (will be rushing down to the counter after i finish work) and i m super nervous, I am worried that I will screw up. My dream job is always to work for MAC... but even if i dun get it. Oh well at least i tried...

I was told I passed the interview and they told me I'll do the demo next week. But I don't know the date of the demo
th_confused_new.gif
The weird thing is after the interview they gave me a personality test to do it.I have never heard of personality test on Spektra before.

Re: My experience trying to get a job at MAC ... I need input!

And now for a different perspective...lol

Hmmmm...how do I say this without sounding too blunt or negative? I can't. It sounds like there might be a couple scatterbrained people working there, or there isn't good communication at the counter. And leaning on the counter with her chin on her fists? Really? Wow.

A LOT of people come in and apply at MAC, and sometimes employees smile and just add it to the bulging stack, and go about their business. Even if one girl put your resume at the top, it's not uncommon for another girl to be clueless about what's going on, especially if she is only there for a few hours a week.

baci is right, express your interest, network, makes friends with the girls.
Don't give up. Or maybe figure out who counter # 2's manager is, and concentrate on communicating with her, if she ever gets off vacation.

Re: My experience trying to get a job at MAC ... I need input!

I've been going to different counters in different cities for the last week, turning in applications/resumes, showing portfolios, and so far that was the only place where they treated me like that
ssad.gif

although they mostly didn't have positions open ATM. i'll probably just go or call once a month and ask, until they have an opening
smiles.gif
however!!!!!!! i will say that they seem absolutely impressed with my portfolio. i was happy
th_DANCE.gif

so for now i just have to play the waiting game!

And i totally agree with ms marymac. Networking with the MAC people is VERY important...

on a sidenote: i went for my makeup demo earlier this week and the next day they called up and told me i was selected. Will be starting work next tues.

So glad my interviews/demo is OVER!!!

I had knots in my stomach until it was over!! lol

I was asked to do a pretty simple look. It turned out alright,I had a gorgeous model (my cousin) so it wasn't hard to make her look good.

The oral interview made me more nervous than the demo! Go figure!! lol

I just tried to be myself and hope and pray that was enough!! I made sure to

look my best, down to my accessories, hair, makeup and outfit.

I was standing at the counter before the interview and was asked if I worked @ M.A.C, by the person who interviewed me :) Good sign right??

Now I wait ...with my knots in my stomach!! lol
